linked components

Hi to everyone,

before explaining the trouble i want to clarify one thing: i use professionally FUSION 360 since 2017 and i've never used the Design History; this is dued because i noticed that, in case of a great number of components (and my projects are composed by not less than 450 components and related joints) it slowed a lot the project.

My trouble now is this: after the latest update i noticed that inserting a component in another project makes no link at all, even if all the components are finally visible and inserted. But if i try to insert the same component in a project in which the Design History is activated the link is present.

So, my question is if it's possible to inserting and linking correctly a component even if a project is without the Design History; because i ensure you that's what i've done all these years...

Thanks for support

Sorry to see that you're facing this problem.

I tried to reproduce the workflow by creating a direct design(Without timeline design history) and inserting into another direct design.

A screencast/video of what you are doing will help me to understand the problem.

I don't believe that anything has changed in this area. It was always the case that if you had a Single-user hub, and you insert a component from another project, that component will be converted into a local component. You should see this dialog:

Unless, of course, you have clicked on the "Don't show me this again" box some time in the past.

The main ways to avoid this message are:

1. switch to a team hub:

Don't be intimidated by "team hubs". You can have a team hub composed of just one person - you. It just adds the capability to invite others, if you choose to. In a team hub, cross project insert is supported, and you will not see this message.

2. copy the component you want to insert into the project you are working on. If the component, itself, has external references, it may be easier to export as a Fusion archive, and import into your active project.

Either of those should work for you

- Solution nr.1 worked well but it's not what i intend to do and, even if i tried to verify if it worked, finally i did not choose this option.

- Solution nr.2 doesn't work because i have not a single component but a complex assembly and all the attempts to copy, in different ways, and paste or insert the project always generated a missed link.

But i tried another way and you, Jeff, gave me this "inspiration" mentioned "FUSION ARCHIVE": i proceeded exporting in F3d both the projects (the main and the one i wanted to insert); then i reopened them using the F3ds and resave them giving other names. Now, in this way, making the classic procedure using "INSERT INTO CURRENT DESIGN" option lead to a present link and solve my troubles. I tried several times using DESIGN HISTORY and not using it. It works always.

According to me there's not a logical way in following this workflow, also because in the past the normal procedure worked well; i always worked in that way.

But i will try to remember this thing and doing this procedure all the times i will need to insert a project with link.

Anyway, thanks Jeff. You've been very useful for me...
