Hi Mark,

Using milestones can only be a particular solution for this problem I suppose.

Main idea here is when we derive a part(body,component etc.) and then break the link we lose all information about this part's origin. in our company "mold production department" is seperated from "design department". but we both work on Fusion360 team enviroment. they really get confused when they work on a mold of design file including derived parts due to unexpected updates' warnings. when they break the link of derived parts then all origin files' information data is lost. at least it could show some data of words that shows the information about the related origin file. it could be as a text box or embedded in derived part's name.

I use derive function to create the molds of some plastic bodies or components in my current assembly design. I move them to another design file by derive command. I want to break the link because if any changes are made on original file will try to update on my mold design, I don't prefer this. So, I break the link of derived bodies or components after I moved them on my new design for mold making. But, when I break the link all useful information(file name, version etc.) about the original source file is lost. this information is essential for me even I broke the link. I am making a mold and now I don't have any idea about where my plastic bodies, components are related to. if you have any suggestions please share.

You might want to experiment with Milestones so you don't need to break the link. If you create a milestone for the version of the mould you derive from, it will not update until you save another milestone.

So for example if you are at version 30 and save a milestone and derive for this version, saves will not update the derive. If at version 40 you where to create a new milestone then you'd get the option to update the derive. You also have the option to choose a version and just ignore the warning to update, would be nice if you could clear the warning without updating.

@cem.yavuz wrote:

But, when I break the link all useful information(file name, version etc.) about the original source file is lost.

This is what Break Link does - it breaks the link between the Derived design and its original. I understand what you want, but that is just not the way Break Link works, and it is unlikely to ever change, in all honesty.

However, what you can do is this: If you save a version of your Derived design just before you Break Link with the source, and give it a descriptive comment, that version will be preserved in history:

You can directly open old versions of designs:

Opening that version will show the Derive still existing in the timeline. You can select it and choose Open Source to take you to the source design:
