stl to solid

i am trying to import an sstl file in to fusion 360 and turn it into a step file as a solid to be able to work with inventor 2017. Unfortunatelly i can not do it because the part in fusion comes broken or with not a skin or surface when i open to inventor. would it be possible to send you the item and if you are able to turn it into solid to guide me through the steps instead of spending lots of time speaking to each other and maybe not beeing able to make this happen? i believe that you could tell me this can be done or this is not possible due to this reason.

Just trying to understand what's happening here.

So your asking us to open the stl file in fusion, convert it to body and show you the file so you can see the history and understand what we've done as their are problems on your side with opening it?

hi there. I would like to know how how i can convert this file in to solid. I am importing it in to fusion 360 but i cant convert it into a solid step file and then exprt it to inventor. it is always broken or with no skin. So is someone knows the procedure how to do it i would be very happy to tell me the steps exactly. Also if someone tells me this can not be done also i would come in a conclsion that this can not be done. Thank you for the reply

You can't. The convert tool is useless. You need to create a "form" and wrap it around your STL model (if it's an organic shape).

starting body, just imported

I did accurate instead of fast (I started by generating face groups).

(not advising accurate unless you need accurate results...) -> takes a while...

these were my generate face group settings.

this is the results of accurate face creation

after combining face groups, I realised it was a waste of time so don't do that

then I got ready to convert the mesh to body

used parameric method as prismatic ended up giving me problems...

this is the converted body

then got ready to export as step file

I hope this file should open properly within inventor, this is the method i used to convert it to a body in fusion, so you can export it to inventor hopefully without problems, if my file works please let us know, however if it doesn't, it's probably me, but this question may be more suited for the inventor forum as it may be something with inventor

Right you seem like an expert so this is something I've been meaning to ask someone for a while as it may also be a solution for this thread

if i was to make a big rectangle (fully solid) with this thing inside of it, I use boolean subtraction to subtract the shape of this within the rectangle making a mold of sort without an opening...

Is there a way to fill it again as one body, e.g - make another rectangle, use bolean subtraction to get rid of material the mold rectangle uses , then leaving behind the shape with not angles/sides... just a sideless body in a way

Hi Ricky. Thank you for your feedback. This is exactly what i am doing but i get the same errors when i use the prismatic. so even if prismatic has complete the solid is not totaly solid is like solid puzzle pieces. So when i turn it in to a step file the inventor shows only some peripheral lines with no solid boddy. so i believe that the prismatic does not work well in order to be completed....

That's because the convert tool is as broken as anything else in Fusion. Create a Form and wrap it around your STL model. That's the only way, trust me.

So true, but that's why the forum exist to find workarounds, and there must be a better way than creating a form around it

I need to see your model first.

"Form" becomes a "Solid" automatically.

Is this your model? If so, I would suggest creating a "form" plane around it first. (BTW, I can not edit my comment because the cursor keeps skipping to the center of the message, HOW CAN YOU F#^#K UP A FORUM LIKE THAT?)

Then use the "pull" command to pull your plane as close to your STL model as possible.
