File is a mess. I'm embarrassed to post it. Learning and have spent hours days on this . Usually figure what went wrong. I tried different slots. Tried deleting most sketch dimensions. Deleted constraints. It's maybe still over constrained. But this is an important concept, to the best of my newbie skill level. Gonna post it. Be nice. Can't swing college level Autodesk cert, and besides that I live in a small rural town. Commute to college is undoable.

You're being hard on yourself, your file ain't that much of a mess, not by a long shot.

So, you're looking on how to make Sketch2 to be fully constrained, is that your goal/task?

Hi,

I will only mention a few mistakes here:

1. important references to sketch1 (projections) are missing
2. many construction lines have undefined ends (white dots)
3. neither circles, slots nor polygons are dimensioned
4. the orientation of the polygons are not determined
5. construction lines are not used for dimensioning

günther

It is better to pattern items as features in the solid, than to pattern (mirrors are patterns) in sketches.

The canvass is not matching the plate, but you are taking the canvass as gospel, and it is giving you the drama.

Sketch 2 - does not have the obvious projection of the body in it. the four outside holes will be the same as sketch 1, so not required in sketch 2..

The hexagons are a pattern, but are pushed to the canvass and not the centre line of the block.

Same for the slots, pattern them as cut outs in the block.

Parametric sketching? - no parameters. What is the underlying challenge?

The Challenge guidelines said fully dimensioned. They said the slot and hexagonal vents just needed to be in a location close to those of the original .I like to put them precisely where they have to be.
Guenther mentioned a few of, I guess, many problems. I'm writing from memory since, my Fusion runs on Shadow virtual pc, and I'm typing on my physical pc, in order to write here. I think it's sketch 2. The challenge exercise says to make the sketch fully dimensioned. Locations of slots and hexagonal vents, only need to be close to original locations.

This is what is written on the Challenge exercise. Two and a half months into using Fusion.Have never done any 3d anything. Teaching myself, don't have the resources to go back to college. Have had two serious Covid infections since I started the tutorials,. So yup, missed some time on it. Almost wasn't here to type this. Dug in and kept going.
" Challenge Page | 1
Challenge
Challenge: Open the supplied dataset Gear Housing Cover.f3d. Using the image provided below, create
the depicted venting geometry. You are encouraged to create additional venting geometry using other
tools explored in this course.
Create a fully dimensioned sketch of the geometry shown in the image below. Any dimensions can be
used to create sketch entities that loosely follows that of the image. You are required to use slots and
patterns to create the geometry on the referenced plane of the housing cover. Use 3D features to create
cuts in the existing solid body.
The following steps/items are required:
• Create a fully dimensioned sketch on the referenced top face of the housing cover
• Use the Center to Center Slot tool to create the slots
• Use a rectangular sketch pattern for the slots
• Use a circular sketch pattern for the hexagons ".

Thank you. Posted the guideline of the exercise below. It said fully dimensioned. I guess I didn't understand the guidelines completely, and missed that it specified center to center slot, as well.. It's older tutorial series. The tools changed and I got confused on some of those as well. They've upgraded and changed names.

You were working too hard. (Some things I would not do, but instructions are instructions. Way too much work in Sketch 1, but did not go back that far.)

Before starting I calibrated the length of the plate to 75 mm - nice round number. Then I positioned it as close as possible to centre of the plate and origin, and re dimensioned the sketch 1 to 75mm as well.

Don't take the canvass as gospel, and using it as a guide, sensible dimensions are available.

You are allowed to sketch on the face of the body, (no need for the offset plane) so with correct preferences,

the blue shading is presented to you automatically when you select the top face of the plate.

Fully Defined enough to finish with other tools.

So the first Hexagon is top dead centre of the pattern, needs 1 horizontal constraint and 3 dimensions to fully constrain from the Origin.

Circular pattern (x 5) and they are all fully constrained.

Slot is a little more tricky, a 15 x 1.5 slot, with the midpoint of the slot 0.5mm below the origin, at a distance left of the Origin, will have it fully constrained. By some cheating I copied the slot to the next position, worked out the centre point position for another Circular pattern, x 2, (deleted the dummy) made the second slot.

The Instructions tell you to rectangular pattern the slots, so these 2 slots will be patterned x 3 to the left.

(Extent and 12.15mm looks about right.)

See how you go, happy to answer questions.
