Browser changes order/hierarchy when editing sketch

Hi,

Can someone explain this to me? I have these components all on one level. Then I go to edit a sketch under "motor bracket". Then I get the view in the second picture; the view now includes the "backlash bracket" from above. I make that invisible and the motor bracket disappears and is apparently under/indented from from the backlash bracket. How did this happen? Is this an issue with the timeline jumping back to the point when I first created the sketch? Is there a way to fix this without killing the history?

Also, I find moving items in the browser to rearrange the hierarchy difficult at best.

Please attach your model for the Forum users to help answer your questions. If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

Q1. Those pics without the timeline included - Nope.

Q2. Can’t see the timeline.

Q3. (Guess) You had Backlash Bracket active, when you made Motor Bracket. Since then you rearranged the Motor Bracket to be listed as pic 1. Editing it now reverts to where it all began.

Q4. I guess so. But only if you keep the history for editing,

Cancel History, NO, No, no,

There’s no come back from that.

Q5. Don’t have your data, to answer properly.

Proper planning it should not be needed. All rules are meant to be broken.

Very important to know where / when / which component is active.

Hi John,

This is one of my first design using Fusion360, and now I am trying to rearrange it into the proper order and the correct component/body/sketch order. One of the biggest problems I find in searching the forums, the responses are often many years old, and the program has changed since then. I often cannot duplicate the process or find the commands shown. I tried a simple operation in a new project. Sketch, extrude (make new component), and then drag the sketch into the new component. It worked in the forum response, but I could not move the sketch to save my life.

I tried both ways with either component active, it didn't make a difference. As I said in my post, I'm thinking it's history or timeline issues screwing me up. I've attached my project, feel free to explore. As I just mentioned in my response to John, this was one of my first designs and now I am trying to fix the hierarchy.

I find this characteristic of things reverting to as they were, sounds more like a sci-fi movie where the characters go back in time and screw up the timeline. What is the purpose of the browser if I can't change the hierarchy? How do I push a button and say "accept this hierarchy"? The program does not seem to be forgiving if you don't follow the proper workflow. Don't get me wrong, I love the program, I've been using various 3D CADs for over 25 years, and I love the component/sketch/body construction. I just wish it was more forgiving and it would sometimes do what I want...

The model was acting as designed. Since you had created the Motor Bracket under the Backlash Bracket to create a sub-assembly, then editing the Backlash Bracket sketch will make the Motor Bracket sketch disappear due to hierarchy. In my Screencast I demonstrated how to separate the component from the sub-assembly and make it independent. I also pointed out that you have a lot of errors in your timeline, you should always strive to take care of these as they occur instead of moving on. I am attaching the F3Z file I used in the Screencast but be sure you know how to handle it before opening. You do not want to overwrite you existing files.

Given it an old attempt. ~~Where do I start~~

Not critical, some comments and hints.

No particular order but things I look for,

Document Origin, not utilised.

Nothing Grounded, No joints, Bodies in the top Section of the browser, and not one sketch.

32 Warnings and 8 fatal errors.

Components without sketches, Components with sketches and no bodies.

10 sketches, One fully defined sketch.

I just had to count them, 115 move icons in the timeline.

Fusion is a sketched based Modeler, when in Rome you end up speaking Italian - eventually.

Not many Italians use Cylinder and Box, in Parametric designing.

If rearranging the Browser, timeline has to be at the right hand end of file.

If a Timeline Icon goes red / yellow, hit Undo, and figure out why.

Where to from here?

Fix the errors first, or you chase the tail of the dog.

Thank you for the video. I started doing just what you described. One thing I noticed, you can't do a cut/paste, but you can do a copy/paste/delete. Is dragging not allowed?

Then tackle those errors / warnings from the left end,

first one being fixed, may give a cleaner downstream.

If Delete is on your mind, do not disregard the Warning,

however you can clean up working from end towards the beginning if you have to. Last in first to go.

I saw that you do use Remove, but some of those were in error.
