Hello,

Is there a way to have fusion respect the body names that exist in the step file when importing into the scene?

The step file was exported from a fusion360 project and i can see that all the body names are intact in the step file, however, when fusion imports them into a new Session (im not sure the correct word for this process) all the body names are replaced with standard Body<number> naming convention.

Is there an option im missing?

Cheers
Kym

In the attached Screencast, I go through the process of showing you the Component Names in the original model, going into the Web Database and exporting the assembly as a STEP file and then opening that STEP file and showing you the Component Names are the same. Please provide a Screencast of your process so we can see what you are doing.

You are correct, body names are not maintained. I usually have no need to name bodies or retain the names but your workflow may have some particular need for this.

Some of the materials get dropped or custom mass's added to parts, i know what they should be, i can match them if i have the name of the body preserved.

im going to try and use the volume and area of the body to match against.

The the project im using for testing this workflow, in theory i could do it by hand, match up the materials and check thast the custom mass has carried along as there are only 150 bodies ... but the main project i need to run this on has well over 6k of bodies, so stream lining this process is what im trying to aim for, and we will need to do this workflow over and over again.

Anyway thanks for your help, if you have any other ideas for how i could achieve this, im all ears.

Cheers

Kym

<STRIKE>1. What software does the STEP file originate from?</STRIKE>

<STRIKE>If you have access to the original software and CAD file it might make a difference exporting it as an assembly instead of as a part. An assembly export will maintain component names and also instancing. </STRIKE>

<STRIKE>2. STEP files do not contain physical materials or textures. </STRIKE>

Scratch that!

Still, why aren't you working with components ?

@jeff_strater why aren't body names maintained when exporting?
