Corrupt File

I was shocked when I tried to open my work and I got an error message saying that the file is corrupt.

I worked on this three hours ago and all was well. I tried a few older versions of the file, but that gave the same error message. After searching the forum, I tried removing the locally stored files in the "F" directory, but that also did not help. Please help, I have thousands of hours of work in this file. I have attached the diagnostic log file.

Look in this folder and see if you can find the file you are having issues with. The names are a little different but you can rename it later. Please note that the path will vary due to the use profile and possibly the version of Fusion 360 you have installed. The Screen Capture here is from a Windows 10 computer.

Hi, thank you for the quick response. Yes, I found the f3d and _xx files there, moved them to another folder and restarted F360. I got the same problem when I tried to open the file again. When I look in the folder, I see that the files are back.

This folder location is a temporary dump of your file being saved to the cloud. If you saved often, you should find more than one entry for the same file. Do not move the file, copy it to another folder. You only need the .F3D file. If one of these does not open, I do not have any other suggestion except to tag an Autodesk representative about your issue. A couple of these individuals, on this Forum are: @jeff_strater and @Phil.E

Okay, thank you. Did you just tag them for me by writing their names like that, or do I need to do something to ask them for help?

By my placing their names in the post normally will alert them to the post, no guarantees. They surely will need a copy of the file(s).

By the way, if you continue to use the Forum, do not use the "Quick Reply" icon as it addresses your post to yourself. Select the "Reply" icon on the Forum post you want to respond to, it is much more meaningful to address the person directly.

It doesn't make sense to me, as the previous saves of the file have opened before. For example, when I set to work earlier today, I opened the file, did some work and saved a few times. You'd expect to be able to at least open the file as it was before I did those new saves....

The version from two days ago also won't open.

Have you tried to open (recover) your file(s) from the Web Database?

I cannot find the words to express my gratitude!!! THANK YOU!!

I can't believe my eyes! After this scare, is there anything I can or should do to make a backup once in a while?

Yes, open your file in Fusion 360, go the the File menu, select Export and save a .F3D copy to a secure place on your hard drive. This is the method you use to share files as well. This copy is not live and will not update as your original file is changed.

Thanks, I did that, except I cannot see the option for .F3D so I chose .F3Z.

Strange, as I have done it this way before and was able to choose the .F3D file type in the past.

A .F3Z file is OK, this means that your design is using "External Linked" files. The F3Z file cannot be opened directly if you ever want to, it must be Uploaded to the Cloud first. This could have been part of your issue before.

Capture a screen capture of your model Browser and post it, do you see any "Paper clips" like icons? These indicate external linked files.

Oh no! The problem is back again, and opening the way I did before doesn't work; same error message.

When I had it open, I used Save as to save another copy, and that also gives the same error message. I could cry.

You have your F3Z export. I would create a new folder in your data panel and upload the F3Z file to it. I would then open the top level assembly and test, test, test. You do not necessarily need to Break Links, that is up to you. Once you have the assembly open, you can right click on each linked file and Save Copy As to make a separate component from it. Do not forget about recovery using the Web Database. I am sure you will find one or more of the linked files is corrupt causing the issues. You have your backup, be patient and methodical to secure a clean viable assembly file. If you would like, you can attach the F3Z file to your post and I can work on it a bit also. Might take awhile but I will offer.

I found that if I open a much much older save, it opens. And whilst that is open, it will open the most recent save too.

I'm wondering if the problem is that when I started this project, I was an absolute F360 beginner, and because of that I have shameful things in it, but I don't know how to clean it up. Perhaps these other issues are now causing this. I thought I could just draw enough to go ahead and build my design, and then ensure that future designs are done properly, I'm close to having it finished.

If I do anything that forces it to recompute everything, the design sort of 'explodes' on the screen. Such as updating an outdated version of a linked design or breaking the link on a design that is okay. 'Undo' solves the problem, but I'm left with the situation that I can't clean it up.

And this is one of many issues in the timeline. But the file has been like this for a long time, and I never had that corrupt file problem before. I have no idea if these kinds of things could cause that.
