Derived parts have odd property when extruding

Hi All,

You can blame this on Jason. On his train parts video, he used insert derive to ensure all the mating parts worked and were built the same. I have taken this and really gone to town on this methodology. The derived parts are just sketches, so no meat on them. However, a couple of things have popped up that range from livable to this needs to be fixed.

The livable is that a derived part can only be derived from once. Ok, just copy and paste new, but the link is broken in the process on copied parts. If you are wanting to have the same feature at odd places, the copies are all not linked. Side note: once plopped into the new model, the derived parts cannot be moved around the browser, so proper planning needs to be done to congregate future copies.

The next bugaboo is that only one profile can be used at a time, so if two profiles from different parts are tried to extrude in the same plane, only one can be, so it causes additional extrusions. OK, so time line is more complicated.

The straw that caused this post is that when I add a sketch to the inserted part, only the original profile is able to be selected, so, if I want to not extrude a portion of the profile, it is an actually not able to be selected. I did work around this by added yet another extrusion feature (YAEF)tm, but this is again extra timeline stuff. I suppose it is related to the bugaboo, but still.

I have include two test files that demonstrate this.

I think that this is at least three feature/bug requests, so, can these be fixed by Tuesday? /s

Trying to help, but I'm confused, have some questions, but I also think you are mixing apples with oranges.

Your f3z timeline was a little corrupted, stepping up the timeline, 2 sketches in the timeline,

but only one in the browser, (Sketch 2 is not here yet,) so I moved it to the correct position before starting.

Yep, keep the link with std Paste. (Move component is the trick)

Been like that since day 1. Extrude can only select multiple profiles from the same sketch at any one time. 2 sketches = 2 Extrudes.

Same thing, different statement? This last extrude is from the first sketch, so how does this effect the problem?

so, can these be fixed by Tuesday?

I have experienced zero problems when adding the rectangular sketch profiles to the extrusion.

No additional extrusion feature needed. If you can create a screencast with your workflow that would likely help to understand what the issue is.

I think you have not fully explored the functionality of the derive feature, but would add that there are a number of current limitations and perhaps bugs that the Fusion 360 is aware of.

That can all be fixed by Tuesday, no problem! I appreciate that you had the presence of mind not specifying the year 😉

If only one sketch is 'active' for an extrude, then why does the profile get clipped by underlying sketches?

When I say derive once, is that if i go back and try to derive the same component again, it is not possible. I guess the move, paste not new is the way to go.

Can you elaborate on what you mean with that?

Could you perhaps demonstrate this in a screencast?

Profile clipped? My guess is - you are using a centre line in both sketches, so the circle and rectangle both have 2 profiles within their own sketch. Changing it in the original file, to Construction will restore expected behaviour of one profile.

If you Project the circle to sketch 2, and hide sketch 1, things will behave as I think you are expecting.

Derive again, - I don’t know what that means,

you can and I showed - you can Derive another.
