Hi John, yes it is my first time on the forum and I need to address my profile, I just didn't imagine I would be helping anyone, but of course I didn't consider the other way around!

I am Bryan Fraser and I live the Glass House Mountains in Queensland Australia, just down the road from the Aussie Zoo (Steve Erwin fame).

I had another look. I had pulled the cut to 500mm, so that was not the problem. I went back and looked at your files. I rolled back the timeline , deleted the body & sketch and redid the window and there you go, it worked. I then put my thinking hat on and and had another look at the file that I couldn't get to work. it turn out it was my original file, so perhaps something has changed when you converted or trimmed the file?

So if your ok I will use your files to push on, after I do my profile later today.

I can only thank you again for your help and without being a pest, are you ok if I call on you again in the future if I get really jammed up? I will be trying every other option first.

cheers

Bryan Fraser

Hi to all. i am very new to Fusion 360. i am trying to develop a project that involves altering 20" High Cube container with access doors and window.

I have been trying all day to get what I want. I am able to import the file to the workspace with a step file. I can extrude from the wall of the container but for the life of me a I can't extrude (cut) through the wall for a penetration's. the warning sign is saying there is no body to penetrate. I assume it is not recognizing the imported file in this action.

I have tried other imported files and got what is was after with one. it is a step file. the problem is that it is a standard size container and I need a high cube.

can anyone help a lame duck. quack, quack!

Hi Gunther, thanks for your reply. I have tried attaching 2 files but somehow can't figure out how to. I cannot see any icon for this purpose. I have tried searching it but can't find anything specific.

there was something about a lame duck! I am a fitter of 50 years and now only recently got into Cad. I will get there, but may be a bit slower than the young guns. if you could assist, I would appreciate it.

I outline the process of Exporting a Fusion 360 model and attaching it to a Forum post. This is what @g-andresen meant when I posted:

The file I exported is attached below for your practice.

<video-js data-video-id="6316432494112" data-account="6057940548001" data-player="default" data-embed="default" class="vjs-fluid" controls="" data-application-id="" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></video-js>
(view in My Videos)

You can attach the F3Z file. The only difference is the F3D file is a single file assembly where the F3Z file is an assembly consisting of a number of External Components. Either one is perfect. Below is a picture of the Browser in an F3Z file. Note the indicated External Components.

Thanks John. the other thing i noticed when i was YouTubing the subject of importing the file is that they say the you can capture the history. i don't see it in my version. i have just paid a years subscription for Fusion 360. i have rebooted a couple of times just in case. Anyway this may not have anything to do with the issue.

cheers

I went back to your original posted question and read it a few times but I am still not sure what you desire. It seems you are saying you cannot cut through the wall of the container. I did that on both models as you will see in the video. I converted both models to F3D files so you can open them up directly and do not have to Upload them to the Cloud in order to open them. Please clarify what you truly want, be glad to help further.

High John, thanks for persisting.

I am trying to design a little accommodation shed. this requires among other things, to make penetration's through the side of the container for such items as, access doors, windows, vents and so on.

I thought by importing a file of a container I would save a whole lot of time, so I thought. Now that I have the issues I am having, I need to find out what i am doing wrong, for this project and the future.

My issue is (and i am not trying have a winge as we say) that I have only recently retired from business and only now have I had time to pick up and learn a Cad system, something I have wanted to do for a longtime.

Anyway I (believe) took your file and tried to replicate what your video showed me. I -

Clicked on create sketch

Highlighted the outer flat panel of the container

Made my sketch (rectangle)

Finished the sketch

went to extrude

Highlighted the sketch

Pulled the arrow back into the container

Hit ok and it only cut the outer flat surfaces, matching the highlighted one and left the valleys and angle face as original.

I am happy to say it something I am doing wrong, but I just can't see where. maybe I have to go back to the beginning and learn again, I don't know? Anyway I am going to stick with it till I beat it.

On another note, can I ask were you are from. You sound American or Canadian. I always get into trouble if I try to pick one. I have made a few trip to the USA for business over the years and still deal a few parts for a company in Michigan, if in fact you are American 🙂

thanks again

It sounds like you are on the right track but you are not extruding far enough to clear all of the wall. Remember there are ridges on the wall. Your sketch in on an outside flat surface so you have to extrude deep enough to penetrate all the surfaces. I pulled a distance from the outside flat to the inside flat of the wall and it is 32mm as shown in the attached screen capture.

I am sorry to say your handle is very incomplete, it does not even have your name much less where you hang your hat.
