topic Can't open a .STEP file or a .SLDPRT file. Am I missing something? in Fusion Support Forum

I have two files that I uploaded to "My data" and I can see them in my list of files. All of the files I built have the option for "Editable" or "Read Only" beneath them. The two files I added, the .STEP and the .SLDPRT files do not have this option.

I can also see them in the "Mine" section of Fusion360 when it is up and running on my machine.

Is this because I am using the limited "Free" version? I don't see this not being an option in all of the documentation I have read. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks so much.

The STEP can be opened using a Fusion 360 Personal License but a SLDPRT cannot. Here is a link to the files types that can be opened with various Fusion 360 license types. You can go the the File menu, select Open and pick the STEP from your hard drive and open it directly.

If you attach the STEP file, the Forum users can test if it is valid.

how did you upload those files? If you upload from within the data panel in Fusion, they will be translated (subject to the limitations that @jhackney1972 pointed to, depending on your license). But, if you upload from the Fusion Team website, the files will not be translate. As @jhackney1972 says, any license should be able to translate a STEP file.

Thanks Jeff. I uploaded them directly to my account via the website. I'll delete them the same way and try uploading them through the Fusion360 application itself when it becomes available again (maintenance today).

Do you know of a quick tutorial about how to do this? I'm pretty new to Fusion360 and just use it for printing parts for my ultra detail scale RC models.

You need to attach your model for testing. A Fusion Personal License should be adequate to open a STEP file but you cannot open a Solidworks file with this license.

If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

what do you believe is inside of this STEP file? Fusion will only import surfaces and solids from STEP. If your STEP file contains only curves, there will be no data imported. As @jhackney1972 says, if you share that STEP file, we can help

OK, attached to my post is a STEP file of a small assembly that I know will open in the current version of Fusion. Try it out. If you screen is blank after opening it. I would suggest checking your Graphic Driver for your video card and also try a different Fusion Graphics driver in your Preferences panel.

You STEP had some issues. I had to run it through a repair using AutoCAD. I then placed it in a Fusion file and it is attached.

By the way, I want to bring something to your attention. When responding to a post from someone, do not use the "Post Reply" icon as this will address your post to yourself. Instead use the "Reply" icon on the post you are responding to address your post to that person. Look back at the messages in this post and you will see what I mean. I am sure the original poster of this thread would appreciate it.

EDIT: I attached the wrong file, the Fusion F3D file is now attached.
