There are probably a dozen methods to do this. The video and attached model shows one of these.

<video-js data-video-id="6321247314112" data-account="6057940548001" data-player="default" data-embed="default" class="vjs-fluid" controls="" data-application-id="" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></video-js>
(view in My Videos)

How can I create an axis in the centre of a body's face?

I've got a VERY simple pair of bodies (see attached); I want to do a circular pattern of the "Tab" component around the centre axis of the "Piece" component. I've tried creating a construction axis at a point in a plane (in this case, the top face of the "Piece" body, but I'm unable to click perfectly in the centre, and I cannot find a way to position it in a parameterized way.

I'm sure that I'm "holding it wrong" -- I'm very much a beginner with this tool! -- so I'd love to know how to achieve this (the eventual goal is to have this tab protruding at the top side of the piece, and then have cutouts on the "bottom" and the "right" that are offset enough to make up a 3d printer's tolerances so that I can make a grid of puzzle pieces that "fit" together, so ... any other advice along those lines is more than welcome!)

Knowing what all the question asked for,

I moved the sketch to place the origin there, edited for the rest of the question.

@autodeskRA3SL Set the printer clearance in the Parameter table, and then edit the Sketch and Thin Extude to that value. I used 0.2mm.

A thing like this the order of operations makes a difference.

Might help....
