Hi,

1. the behavior is caused by equating the individual element widths.

The element width is determined from the total width, the spacing and the equal constraint.
Maybe @jeff_strater can say something about this.

2. I avoid Trim and Extend almost completely, as it is mostly unnecessary for feature creation.

I've been using F360 for a couple of years now and have often come across the issue of a fully defined sketch becoming undefined after using the trim command. In most cases the behaviour is inexplicable and frustrating but I usually find a solution. In this instance I really can't find a way to fully define what should be a very simple sketch.

I'm designing a pair of gates so started with a pair of rectangles side by side which are defined by 3 parameters:

overallwidth

gateheight

gatespacing

I've also applied a colinear constraint on the lower edge of each rectangle, and equal constraints to the lengths and heights of each rectangle. The gate outlines are now fully defined and the can be altered using the 3 aforementioned parameters.

Next I offset one of the rectangles to create an outer frame thickness.

Next to add a diagonal brace, I create a construction line corner to corner, then offset this each side to create the brace. So far so good, all fully defined.

Now comes the problem. I want to trim the ends of the diagonal brace back to the inner (offset) rectangle. When I do this both outer rectangles and the inner rectangle become undefined, and nothing I've tried seems to fix it. The rectangles haven't changed so why have they become undefined? All the original constraints that were sufficient to fully define the rectangles are still there, so any attempt to add further constraints or dimensions is futile. I also can't see why the diagonal lines have become undefined. Can someone please explain what's going on here? In my opinion the way the trim command does this is bug that desperately needs fixing. I'm sure people will say that I'm combining sketches and the outer frame and diagonal brace should have their own sketches, but this is so basic it should just work.
