If you know which action causes the error, isolate the elements involved for upload or recreate the situation in a separate file.

Joints not working correctly

Hi,

I am trying to use joints to retain a sub-assembly in a higher level assembly. When I edit the lower level part file, rather than the part moving relative to the joint, it appears that the joint is broken (although there is no warning that this has happened. So the result is that the part remains joined /jointed but in the wrong location in the assembly. I have created the joint by highlighting the centre of the black part and adding a joint origin and then the centre of the grey part. The black part is part of a larger assembly that has been imported as a STEP file. I have imported the STEP file because although this assembly exists in Fusion 360, the assembly to big and Fusion crashes frequently with it open so editing parts gets very tedious and time consuming.

I have attached before and after images. The red arrow shows the dimension that was changed on the component and as can be seen the part has disappeared in side the other part. after edit to grey partBefore edit to grey part

This is not an isolated case of this issue and my current solution is to delete the joint and re-add it. This is not ideal and wastes vast amounts of time.

In that case you are better off calling official support.

Without a model, troubleshooting is complete guesswork.

I can say that I work a lot in assemblies, often with with thousands of components, and the joint system so far has been rock solid for me. It is possible that there is a bug, but based on my extensive experience wit user designs here on the frum I am 99% confident that there is user error at play in this case.

Thanks for the reply. I am not really interested in where the blame lies, I just want a resolution to this issue. How do I call official support? This has never been made clear to me and I have always been requested to put my technical issues out to the "community" in the past.

Understood! Can you share that file/model privately with an Autodesk Employee? They are under NDA and will not share the file with anyone else.

I would also offer help if you can share the file with me privately, but I am only an Autodesk Expert Elite and not an Autodesk Employee.

@rayTG333 wrote:

If an Autodesk Employee, has given you that advise - I have read this in other posts as well - I find that completely unacceptable. Employees get paid for that work, albeit they might not have the level of expertise as some of the forum members.

The forum members do this on a voluntary basis.

I will take this issue to the Fusion 360 Autodesk Expert Elite channel. Perhaps someone will reach out!

Hi, I might be able to help if you can share the assembly with me.

If the joint isn't complaining, chances are there is a missing joint and some components are disconnected (floating). This can happen a bit too frequently in Fusion due some things that are unique about it. We are working on making that less likely. Until then it is good to assume that there might be missing connections/joints and to try to find them. There is no automatic rigidity imposed by assemblies on their children.

There is a nifty text command that can tell you the groups of component occurrences that are connected. Ideally, an assembly will just have a single group -- everything. You almost never need a free-floating component occurrence. An occurrence is a particular occurrence of a component you see in the browser/view. It is determined by the path of components from root to that component (A->B:1->C:3 and A->B:2->C:3 are two occurrences of C).

The text command is:
fusion.connectionsets

This will dump sets of connected occurrences (paths) with each set separated by an empty line. If you have more than one, you are missing joints. You can include ground as a "connection" if you type "fusion.connectionsets /ground"
