When I create a new component and try to import a canvas to that component (with it selected) it only adds the canvas to the parent folder of the project rather that that specific component. How do I add a canvas to a new component for organizational purposes? I am using the consumer / personal version of Fusion 360.

The only method to have a Canvas Insert to stay related, and fall under, a certain component is to insert it into an External Component which can either be created in the assembly or Inserted into it from the Data Panel.

From the information I have been able to gather your answers make sense.

For some reason it still doesn't seem to be linking the Canvas to the Component when I have it selected.

Hi,

Even if the file origin is disabled and partially overlaps with the component origin, it can be selected.
If you want to be sure, you have to open the origin folder first and then select a layer directly.

Hello!

Thank you for all the advice and your help with figuring this out. The video illustrated well for me that there is a very small area in which I may click on the Origin with the Origin of the Sub Component being viewed. A few pixels in either direction could connect the Canvas to the Parent rather than the sub Component accidentally. After opening up the folders for the Origin of the sub Component, making the Origin visible and then opening the file structure of the Main File I could see that this slight deviation of where I click dictates to which Origin the Canvas is linked.

It still seems to me that this function is working much more seamlessly for others as they can just select the relevant Component and import the Canvas directly to that Component rather than opening the Component Origin, Making it Visible and then placing it.

This solution has solved my problem. Thank you again!

If you are referring to the box, that appears with the origins planes selection, this can be displayed in most any operation by hovering your mouse cursor over whatever you want a list of and hold your left mouse button until the list appears. The list will contain all the entities under the cursor when you held down the left mouse button.

In the Animated GIF, I am hovering my cursor over numerous faces. As I hold down my left mouse button, the list of these faces appear. I can move between them and they highlight. I can then left click on the one I want. It works is most all selection operations.

I had the same issue. For me when you create a new project, the ORIGIN is disabled, and when you create NEW COMPONENT the ORIGIN of new component is also DISABLED. Then when you do insert CANVAS you have to select a plane, and I guess because of the hierarchy (and because both origins are disabled), the higher origin is selected. All you have to do is enable the new component origin and then canvas goes under it.
