Emboss - Error: Cannot create emboss feature at specified depth. Adjust depth.

I use the @hanskellner Voronoi add in to create designs. It's a great tool. I often generate designs to emboss onto curved faces. My faces are true arcs cut from a circle. (Not Splines)

I'm not emersed in Fusion 360 each day and it's been a while since I embossed onto an ARC. Today I generated a Voronoi Pattern with the @hanskellner tool and tried to Emboss onto an ARC'd surface. I've done it no less than 50 times, but today F360 generated the following error;

Error: Cannot create emboss feature at specified depth. Adjust depth.

After the error, I opened a previous model of which I had successfully embossed onto a curved surface. I found the Emboss in the timeline and went to Edit Sketch. I then copied that Voronoi pattern to the current model and embossed it onto the curved surface. It worked great.

I can see there is a difference in the formatting of the two Voronoi sketches when placed side by side in the same project. I try exporting the new Voronoi design to dxf or svg and then import it back and see if that cures this.

I think I'm being stymied by some layering in the Voronoi sketch. I can see reference marks on the pattern that works, and they are not present on the pattern that does not work.

Video attached. You can see exactly what I did to make it work, but I want to know what is causing this issue.

Hi,

Without seeing the file, I suspect that the error message is caused by insufficient spacing between the individual profiles. If these profiles then lie over a curved area, overlapping occurs, especially at greater embossing depths.

Are there any unresolved issues highlighted in your Timeline? If yes, the obvious question is - why?

Perhaps it is because I watched your video on small screen, but I did not see the reference marks that you refer to. Can you Attach still screenshot zoomed in on these marks (with and without). And of course as suggested by @g-andresen Attach your actual file here.

@kepp.andrews I just tested the software out as I had never heard of this tool. It took me 4 goes to insert an emboss as I was getting errors because my size was not right for emboss.

Another thing I found is it did not like to emboss to close to a fillet or it would give a error, I had to do fillet after emboss.

Also I found the body of the model had to be under the Voronoi Sketch Generated

I also inserted the Voronoi Sketch into my component, that I was editing the body of.

Thanks for sharing the tool hope you get it working, as I just letting you know the tool worked for me.

Thanks to all who commented. I have included another video and the F3D file as a demonstration. Of course, both Voronoi sketches work perfect in the attached example demo.

1. My real question is what is different about the two Voronoi patterns?

a. Why does one Voronoi sketch have all the points visible?
b. This one seems to work on any curved ARC plane.

2. Why does one sketch have no points visible?
a. This one did not work on other models but worked in the demo (attached).

b. Picking individual cells, that did not overlap any boundary on the projection plane would emboss.

I included a second video that shows something I do not understand. Again, what is the difference between sketches with one showing no points and one showing all the points?

I can accomplish what I want to do but hope someone could enlighten me as to the difference between Voronoi sketch with points visible and Voronoi sketch without points visible.

NOTE: When I export the native generated Voronoi design as DXF and then import it back –OR- Move it to another Project and then move it back to the original project then all the points are visible and the Voronoi pattern is able be embossed on any ARC surface.

I don't think this is a problem with the tool. I think my isolated issue has something to do with that particular model. It has been revised no less than 50 times, copied into other projects and has some lost references. I suspect the problem is with the model and not your tool. The Voronoi generator tool has been great! Please don't waste cycles on this issue. I found a simple work around and the generated SVG files have worked on every other model surface that I've Embossed.

I recently bought a true 100w 3D MOPA Fiber Laser and I noticed that the accompanying software only likes to use certain DXF files or certain layers in the DXF file. I suspect therein lies the issue for F360 also. (at least for this isolated model)

Hi,

I think you have basically described the problem when dealing with DXF.
My experience with this format is mainly that compatibility suffers every time you run it through applications, more in one and less in the other.
But it's generally not possible to say in which application editing and exporting DXF is more problematic.

No worries. I'm always interested to help if I can. It's also nice to see that the Voronoi add-in is useful for you. It was a small project I created on the side and released in case others wanted to use it.

I agree - it's most likely DFX file's problem. As soon as I switched to importing my graphics as SVGs, the Emboss works as a charm every time.
