"Paste New" functioning but not "Paste"

I am trying to copy a component from one file to another, I want them to be linked, so I can continue to edit the original component in its file, and have it change in the other files as well.

I have done this before with a component and it is linked to the new file - but now I want to do the same with other components from other files than the first linked file. in other words I have copied one component from file 1 to file 2 and now want to copy a component from file 3 to file 2 - this I can not do with Paste only with new Paste ? why don't I get the option ? if I go into the top menu line under Edit and choose paste there - nothing happens !

Do you have the original Component as a separate *.f3d file in your Data Pnnel?

Copy a component from one file and then using Paste to add it to another is not possible and as far as I know, has never been. You can Save the Component to the Cloud and Insert into the Current Design as a linked file. You can also Save to the Cloud and then Derive it into another file.

Derive might do what you are describing.

I think @HughesTooling is correct, but I would recommend that you share your designs and explain in more detail what you want to accomplish.

"Derive" is powerful functionality and should only be used when really necessary.

It works - I marked the component - then save copy as - and placed this in the same folder, as than my main project was in. Then found it there, right clicked on it and Saved into current design - (Paste would be easier !!)

Have not tried it as saving it in the cloud and insert into current design worked well

The component will no longer be linked to the original design if you use save copy as. If you use derive you can get a copy of a component that's still linked to the source design.

well I did get a link but could not test it, as I had a problem with an earlier link, that muks up my project if I try to synchronise them -so I'll wait and test it later
