Many of my projects begin without a specific part or model name, so I use a descriptive name for the initial project.

I can change the name of the file in the data panel under my work folders, but it doesn't change the top level name of the first component in the browser. I've tried right-clicking on it and changing it through the properties' dialog.

Out of desperation, I've just spent $15 on properties + just to rename a part. If there's another way, I can't find it.

I do not see any issue in the process of renaming the Data Panel file and having it transfer to the top level component in the Browser. Make sure the file is closed when you do the process of renaming. Take a look at the Screencast.

You see it works OK for me, do you not get the same results? If not, please create a Screencast showing your process.

I am seeing the same issue. This problem arose since a recent update that changed how version numbering and properties function. Please see the attached screenshot showing that the filename and top-level component name are no longer the same. Like the original poster, I am failing to find a way to change the top-level component's name.

If you select your Fusion file and click "view on web", then navigate up to the folder the design is in, the name of the design file in the web view should match the top-level component name. If you right click the 'misnamed' file and "Rename" it, then refresh your view in Fusion, the file name shown in the web view should now appear on the top-level component name in Fusion.
