Ok here are the files for the redo. the part was created fresh from a sketch then extruding of the various bodies needed to create the shape needed. then turned into a component and then saved as an external component. the sheet metal part was created using the same process as the original and then imported back into the bench model.

this time it worked as expected.

both the original stuck part and the new part are in the bench model if that helps.

As the topic says, I created a simple sheet metal tray but the tray is Locked in place. I added some hardware to it as well. In its own model I can't move it and likewise in the overhead assembly. when im in the overhead assembly, the hardware(that is connected via joints) will move but the tray will not.

File Attached, Working on a Mac Pro Fully licensed

Thoughts.

The sheet metal tray is a BODY. You cannot move bodies like you can components. I converted the body into a component using the Boundary Fill method. Model is attached. I had to ZIP the assembly model so the Forum would accept it.

If this answers your question, please select the "Accept Solution" on my post. If you need further help, please ask.

yes but why would it behave that way in a higher level assembly where it is imported as a component?

Here is the higher level assembly, and a picture of what happens when I move the component. the clinch nuts move around the plate is just stuck. this happens whether I drag or use the move copy command.

I believe it has to do with the Base Model you started with but I cannot prove it. This is one I hope @Phil.E might be able to explain.

This looks like a bug. It would help to know if there are more like it, or if it's easily reproduced in a new file. In the mean time, I sent this to the sheet metal team for their review. Thanks!

A lot of my design work is iterative in nature, upgrading and tweaking existing designs, or designing entirely new things from whole cloth.

My process for sheet metal parts is to create a "Buck" of the part I need on the assembly model. then I bring that into its own component and then cast the sheet metal part off of that by creating a starter body(essentially extrude a new body off of an edge) then converting that to sheet metal. from there I apply the needed operations to match it to the buck that I created. Ive done it this way hundreds of times and this might have happened once or twice before though at the time I think I just started over.

I will try redoing the part from scratch using the same process. I think I've had something like this happen before but it was right around the time that the "anchor to Parent" feature went active. At the time I think I chalked it up to me not fully understanding that new feature.
