Autodesk should definitely fix the .f3d file type issue if assemblies should not be saved as that, since this is the only file type that is generated when downloading from their web portal rather than exporting from Fusion 360.

That's not what I see. Just tested an assembly export from the online hub and get this, note fz3 extension.

I have a file I designed with an old account a few years ago. I saved everything locally as .f3d files, and now, when trying to upload them to a new account, I'm getting "New design cannot be created from a local file containing external references" errors.

I've tried uploading to Fusion 360 instead of opening the file, and it loads, then disappears from the explorer.
Does anyone know of a way to break external references within a file without opening it? I'm almost certain the external reference is a canvas image I used as the starting point of a design.

Thanks

@hipshakestyle Did you by any change export the original file to another format but simply renamed it as .f3d? This file is not showing up an f3d. Anyways you can try this:

1. Log into https://login.autodesk360.com/login
2. Upload this file
3. Now go into Fusion and browse to this location - you should see the file
4. Right click on the design and select "Create Fusion design"
5. This should create an f3d of the file for you

you should be able to do the same for all the other components and then you can resolve each component to its original component.

I opened your file in debug mode and got this.

Have you still got all the missing reference files? If you have put all the missing files into a new project along with this file and try opening it from there.

Not sure how you downloaded this as an f3d, that's not normally allowed, you should have got a f3z assembly file. Did you copy it from a folder on your computer rather than download?

Interesting, I do have all those files still but they are titled somewhat differently with a long string of characters after the regular title. example:

_Aeroquip -12 to Hose.619f1a1b-438d-4544-955b-62a26d84a830.f3d

I'll give this a shot since all the reference files are functional, just the oil block is not. Thanks for the info, I really expected the error to be the canvas image that's long been deleted so this is somewhat a relief.

Edit: I downloaded these files from the fusion360 web portal when saving personal files from an account owned by a previous employer. It was faster to archive/download through there than to open and save them locally. I have about 70 files that are .f3d.

As for adding the file to a project, I can import all the other components to an open project by right-clicking in the explorer pane but the oil block.f3d does not have that option. Do you have any suggestions on how to add this to a new project containing the other files?

Thank you for the suggestion!

I actually exported the files via the fusion 360 online portal as an archive, this might be why it saves as an .f3d format instead of .f3z

I did this simply because it was faster than individually loading the files on while I went through an account tied to a previous job and removed/downloaded personal projects before relinquishing access.

@hipshakestyle wrote:

The fact you have files with those odd names points to at some time someone copied files directly from windows file system. Maybe they had a crash and tried copying the files to recover a project. You would have probably found you couldn't open the assembly file before you downloaded it.

I have an idea how you might be able to open and relink the assembly file.

First download all the f3d files to a directory on your computer, including the assembly file.

Go to the file menu then View - Show Text Commands (Ctrl+Alt+C).

Make sure the Txt radio button is checked bottom right of screen and enter Options.DebugEnvironment /show

Now next to the file icon top of screen you should have Open a document icon.

Click open document and navigate to the assembly file and open it.

You should get prompts for each of the missing design and then open to select the missing file. I think if you don't have the correct file you can select cancel.

Select a design for all the missing parts and hopefully the design should open.

I noticed playing around with this you are not prompted the name of the missing file so here's a screen grab of the missing files. I'd guess this is the order to select them.

One final problem is you will not be able to save the design as a assembly with external components. So what you'll have to do is break the link to all the linked designs then save to your hard drive as an f3d then upload that to a project in Fusion.

Perfect, this is what solved it for me. Thank you

As for the unusual naming scheme, I'm not entirely sure what happened since I downloaded these from the Autodesk360 archive about 10 months ago. The only time I remember moving them was after downloading from the online portal to my downloads folder and moving them to a separate folder where I keep projects.
Autodesk should definitely fix the .f3d file type issue if assemblies should not be saved as that, since this is the only file type that is generated when downloading from their web portal rather than exporting from Fusion 360.

I had a problem with a file not uploading, then I "lost" it when trying to fix this, then when I found and tried to load / upload the f3d file in %AppData%, I got the external refereneces error seen in this thread. The steps above in the accepted solution have worked for me. In my case it seems like the external referencce was not needed, when I deleted it everything still looks fine I think. I wonder if in my case this error was what was causing the upload to fail.

I just noticed that this thread is quite new too, so I wonder if some recent change has made this issue come up.
