Ok, but now it says the trial has expired yet nothing pops-up to allow a student or faculty registration. It still allows me to use the software (so far) after the 30 day trial. Confused.

Is the Fusion 360 version from the Apple App Store a free student version? The reason why I ask is that I tried to download the software from the Autodesk site but my Mac wouldn't permit installation (something about violating the Mac's security?). But then I was able to install it from the Apple App Store ... no problem! I used my university email address but it didn't seem to give me an option for registering for an educational license. Confused by the whole process. I am the faculty who wishes to use the software for the engineering class.

You are all most there. Once you sign up, Launch Fusion 360. There will be a trial banner in the menu bar top right.

Simple click the banner and complete the sign up as an educator.

I didn't see a banner. So I deleted the Apple app store version and downloaded from the AutoDesk site but I had to bypass the Apple signed and trusted developer security.

I guess my real question is if the Apple app store version of Fusion 360 is current and can be set up for the free student license. I only need them to use it for the semester. I really don't wish to bypass the Apple Store for installation.

I run on Windows rather than Mac, so my information could be wrong, but -

it is the Student Serial Number that determines the license behavior.

Each student needs to create an account on the Autodesk Student Community to be assigned their own personal Serial Number.

http://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/students-teachers-educators?mktvar004=668081&internalc=true

As far as being current - the software checks to see that the install is the current release and automatically downloads latest release (new release about every 8 wks).

Thank you. I went to the eduction link you posted but I can't see where it says whether it is the free student/educator license. I will need to call someone at Autodesk and have it explained to me as to how the students register after downloading the software from the Apple app store. I notoiced that the Apple app store places the Fusion 360 software in the Application folder on the Mac but the version from the Autodesk store does not appear in the Mac Application folder but only directly on the Dock. Strange. Maybe it is because I bypassed the Mac security for the Autodesk downloaded version? It says I have 6 days left on the Fusion 360 trial ... I checked on under Management in my Autodesk account.

OK .You are using the Apple MAc store version. Let me try and clear things up... there is some miss information in this thread.

You don't need to go to the autodesk edu site. You don't need a serial number.

When you or your students get the client from the Apple mac store, you will set up your accounts on first launch. This starts a 30 day trial. You can confirm this by going to the Fusion about box and see the entitlement is Trial.

At the end of the 30 day trial, a dialog pops up and offers different purchase/license options. At this time you can select the student/educator license. This grants a three year license to you and your students. If after three years, you or your students are still at an education institute you can sign up for another three years, and can renew as edu users as many times as needed, so long as you meet the edu terms.

The client, when downloaded from fusion360.autodesk.com, shows a trial banner. This behavior is different from the mac app store version. This is due to Apple policies. They do not allow us to show the banner. This difference in behavior can cause some confusion. I apologize. Aside from this there is no difference in capability.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much! (And everyone who has replied has been very helpful and polite.) I know Apple does things differently ... I've used so many systems and OSes over the years. Back to using Apple. I find Fusion 360 an interesting approach ... moving towards centralization of design on the cloud. Very appropriate ... Cloud, iCloud, AutodeskCloud, etc, etc.

I do not remember having any countdown warning in the application menu bar.

My About dialog is the same as shown in your image: 2.0.2204 Active Plan: Student

I downloaded Fusion 360 from the Apple App Store. This will avoid having to bypass the Mac App Store security in Security & Privacy within System Preferences. It appears that that is performed automatically ... didn't have to follow any external procedure that I can remember other than the original Apple App Store installation.

If you try to follow the installation procedure from the Autodesk site it will ask you to turn off the Security & Privacy security.

Are you logging into https://manage.autodesk.com with your EDU e-mail address?

If you look in the All Products & Services area and not the Trials area, you'll see that there is a Fusion 360 student entitlement listed. I just double-checked and you are good to go!

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Thanks,

So the procedure for installing Fusion 360 for a Windows machine is via the AutoDesk site and for the Mac machine from the Apple App store (avoids having to by-pass the Macs security preferences). And then the students then proceed to the AutoDesk Educational site to set-up their student license. The installed software then becomes a student license?

I know, I am 'slow'! But professors as well as students are easily confused!!

Any chance you can help me with a similar issue? I had to reinstall Fusion360 on my computer and when I signed in it says term is expired. I click on it and sign up as student, it says that it accepts, and will update soon, but never does. I have the same "term expired" red box at the top after 3 days and I can't save anything. My about screen doesn't say student but the management page does.
