Can not open a file that is .SLDASM

Hello!

I have a file that was sent to me that I need to open but I can not open in Fusion 360 .

I get an error aying that it is not a valid zip file.

The file extension is .SLDASM from a solid works user.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi @PetePayne,

The issue is that you just have the master assembly (.sldasm) and none of the individual referenced parts (.sldprt). Realistically, you will want to collect a Pack n Go from Solidworks and then import the assembly as well as the referenced files into Fusion 360. The below screencast documents this process.

Thanks for the info. Hmmm, so the guy that drew that for me is no longer around and I do not know any one else with solid works.

Could you do the pack n go operation for me and send it back?

Hi @PetePayne,

Same issue - that file has none of the referenced .sldprts that the .sldasm is trying to reference. Therefore, when I open it in SWx, it comes up empty. Unfortunately, without those .sldprts, I do not believe we can open the file :/. I am not the most SWx savvy however - perhaps another user in the forums has a better suggestion to move forward.

Do you have access to SolidWorks?
Do you have access to a project folder with many files or is this the only file that you have?

No I do not have access to SW, The guy that drew that up for me a while back I can not seem to contact now.

Thanks for the input. I will keep trying to contact the guy that drew them for me a while back.

At this point I will probably start over and draw it in Fusion., seems to be the better choice in the long run. I was just trying to avoid some of the tedius measuring I did before.

I am having the same issue. Converting individual parts works great, but I am not given the option to select the top level assembly file.

When I try and open the assembly file later, I am presented with this error:

.SLDASM is the file extension for SolidWorks assembly files. Autodesk Fusion 360 does not natively support the ability to open SolidWorks files. However, there are a few ways you may be able to open the file in Fusion 360:

You can ask the person who sent you the file to save it in a format that Fusion 360 can open, such as .STEP or .IGES
You can use a file conversion tool to convert the .SLDASM file to a file format that Fusion 360 can open
you can use a third-party add-in or plugin for Fusion 360 that allows you to open SolidWorks files.

It is important to keep in mind that converting a file from one format to another can result in loss of information, depending on the complexity of the file and the conversion tool used.

Incorrect information. I created a video on the process years ago. It is relatively straightforward in Fusion.

My apologies, I have read an old forum post.

You can import .sldasm, but it needs all .sldprts in order to it be successful.

There has been a lot of good information from other Fusion 360 community member under this post, but I will try to show you an example:

If you have multiple .sldasm files, then you need to specify the top component. I usually just check the biggest file size.

Wait until it finishes. Depends on the assembly size, can take several minutes.

And you are done. You Solid Works file assembly is uploaded to Fusion 360.

The file directory may look something like this:
Please note the file types on the right (discard IGS and PNG files).

I have followed those steps and the option to choose the "Top" assembly is not there. The solidworks files are attached.

For some context I am trying to convert solidworks assemblies into Revit families. This model is more proof of concept than anything else.

Try extracting UC folder contents to the same folder as Excavator ZeroTwo.SLDASM and then follow the procedure as posted above.

Just open the data panel and click on the upload button
then select then Drag and drop (Or select) the files wait for upload and there you go
