topic Another Auto Save Complaint in Fusion Support Forum

I've read some posts on this, tried some of the solutions, and haven't had any luck. I figured I would just share my feelings about it now.

Worked on a project for about 8 hours today. I definitely saved it about 10 minutes in, after making the base for the project. I always make sure to save a project at least once.

So no, I did not save for the next 7+ hours. Foolish I guess, but it blows my mind for such a powerful program not to be able to do something that simple. My auto save is set to every 5 minutes. I did not lose internet connection. I wasn't even doing anything when I crashed. I literally got up to go to the bathroom and came back to it not responding.

After the crash, it showed me the recovery dialog, which helped me recover TWO projects that I haven't worked on since mid July. The project that I had worked on all day was not there. So here's the kicker though... it didn't even save the base that I spent 10 minutes on. It's literally a completely blank file. There is absolutely NOTHING in it. What happened to my save from 10 minutes in?

I am really not in the mood for the typical guys who come in here telling people to save frequently. If i lost an hour or two, I would lick wounds and soldier on, but this is absolutely insane. It's apparently been a problem for a long time, too. So I am still gonna go with it being MOSTLY someone else's fault. The only program nowadays that I actually manually save in is Adobe Illustrator, because they do not have auto save at all. If your auto save is so terrible, remove it and let people know that it doesn't exist. Autosave was one of the first things that I checked when I got the program.

No matter what anyone says, I should not have to save if the program has an auto save feature. Next, you'll be telling me to double check the geometry projections of the software with my Ti-80 and a protractor, because a program can't be expected to do what it says it can do.

At least I know to save every 5 minutes MANUALLY in this program now.

Re: Another Auto Save Complaint

Hi @Anonymous

I can above all empathize with losing work. It absolutely is the worst. I'm really sorry to hear that you've lost work. The application log files record these attempts and it might be helpful to post your diagnostic log files to this post so that we can review them for the history. You'll find a command to collect the diagnostic log files in the help menu. You can upload them here. I'm not sure if there will be anything helpful in the files, but I will be happy to look through them.

I interpret what you're saying is that you should never have to use the save button. Going back some time, Fusion originally started life in Beta without a Save button at all. You would just close the design and it saved. Recovery files were saved more aggressively. The original idea was that the save button was antiquated. After all, who even recognizes what the floppy disk icon is anymore? It was one of the things that really alerted me to the out of box thinking occurring within the Fusion development team.

However, feedback came in that auto-save disrupted the "flow" of work, the close on save was not ideal, save was desirable, and changes were implemented to resolve this problem. Saving and auto-save or recovery technology has gone through a few improvements since that time. Sadly, in this case, it appears to not have held up well. I hope you will share the diagnostic log files so we can dig deeper.

However, I hope that the history does show that an attempt rid CAD of the save command once and for all and it was democratically removed and modified as a result.

With the history out of the way, there are a few limitations to the recovery technology in the current implementation that you should be aware of. If a command is active in Fusion 360, any command dialog is active or you are actively working on the design, the auto-save attempt is aborted as to not to interrupt the user. This means that a recovery file is not saved. Given this knowledge, you should not rely on the recovery system if there is progress that you would like to come back to.

You can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + SHIFT + S or (Mac: Command + Shift + S) to forcibly save a recovery file. This file is saved to the recovery directory and is not synced to the cloud as a new version. Only the Save command syncs a version to the cloud. You should use this command as you can easily revert to any version stored in the cloud. If anything, this should encourage saving to the cloud more to help with version management. Using the Save command enables you to go back to a particular point in history. The recovery file on the other hand, is last save wins. The history of the design is overwritten and lost.

The recovery save is the best suggestion available when working in Fusion when you don't want to officially save a version in the cloud, but you also don't want to lose any progress. With that said, many improvements are cooking for Fusion 360. The Fusion 360 Ideastation is the best way to have your voice heard and influence the decision of future implementations/improvements.

Hopefully that helps explains how we got to here and what you can do to help influence the future of the product. I am happy to help if you have any questions or concerns.

Kindly,
