topic Inheritance Bodys working/not working in Fusion Support Forum

Hello

with Inheritance I mean, that there is a linked root design/body which could be changed later on. Then there are specialized versions of this root design/body which are in one or more new files/designs. In the image below you see the root body on top and two specialized bodys underneath.

Important is that the root is a different file, which can be linked also to other designs and that the special versions can also be linked into other designs.

Now my problem is that it is not consistent to create. I got it one time working and on the next time where I do exactly the same it is not working.

Here is a screencast showing the issue:

I know it is possible to derive Bodys in the same design, like @TrippyLighting has shown:

Why dows this not work consistent with linked components. Do you know why this is the case?

I believe there is a number of bugs at play.

I've tried a few tings myself a few days ago to help a user in another thread and copy/pasting bodies out of linked competes does not work in every case.

Sometimes you even get the copy paste icon in the timeline but no duplicate body is to be found anywhere.

What I have found to work reliably is the Create->Boundary Fill in the Patch workspace. You can also use that to copy a body.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting! I had a look into this today and agree that there is definitely some odd behavior going on.

I received very inconsistent results when copy/pasting the body from an x-referenced component into a new component - sometimes it would create an empty copy command in the timeline if I pushed it through, sometimes the copy would actually be created. I appreciate you showing this inconsistency in your screencast! I did find that it would reliably copy the body if I cancelled out of the first failed paste command and copied the body to the new component immediately afterwards (it would reliably work on the second try).

When you create the hole in your screencast, I would not expect it to cut through the x-referenced components - x-refs cannot be edited within the design they are inserted into in Fusion 360. This is a known issue that the development team is reconsidering for the future, but at this point it is a current limitation.

What is very unexpected to me is that, when the copy/paste of the x-referenced body goes through, the new body appears to maintain its link to the x-referenced component and updates with it. Because no link is shown between the copy/pasted body (or the new component it is pasted into), this is clearly not working as intended - I would think that, because no link is shown, the new component and the body within it should not maintain a link to the x-referenced components.

I have logged FUS-35013 with the development team to address this problem.

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention! I did find that the boundary fill workaround presented by @TrippyLighting was a very reliable way to create a un-linked copy of the body from the x-referenced component. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I created a youtube video a while ago explaining what copying and pasting components and bodies in DM and TL mode does. This also directly applies to bodies in linked components.

In timeline mode copy/pasted bodies are always linked. This is a key element that even allows to create feature configurations in Fusion 360. The screenshot @Anonymous is from the class I though at AU last year on this subject.

Really, Boundary fill and copy/pasting a body should do the same thing and a usually do in case the body paste operation succeeds. The Boundary fill operation also create a body that is linked to the body in the linked component and updates with it.
