@innovatenate I hope changing the Export to use that unuser friendly dialog is not by design or seen as an improvement. Over the last few days I've ended up saving to the wrong directory several times and the wrong file type even more as it defaults to f3d every time. Why you'd change from the standard windows save as dialog to what is in effect just a dos prompt I don't know, please can we have a simple Export like before. Being able to see what's in the directory you're saving to makes exporting so much easier.

The right-click "Save Copy As" feature was a great way to grab a component and within Fusion360 create a copy of a component in the browser directory in which you were working. Now it goes to the Export menu and the work around is export a .Step and then reimport that .step file. Why can't this still be done right within Fusion360?

The "Save to a project in the cloud" used to create models that only opened on fusion360 in a web browser. Is this now the "Save Copy As" functionality?

If you want to create a copy of a component in the browser within the same design, you can use the copy and paste command.

If you use the Save Copy As, the default seems to be to export to the hard drive. However, you can select to save the component as a Fusion Design in the project (you are correct, this is the same thing as Save Copy As used to be). This design can then be inserted into other Designs as an X-Referenced component. The X-Reference link can be broken at anytime of course.

Check out the below Screencast and let me know if that helps to address your inquiry. I'm happy to help if you have further questions.

@innovatenate Any idea why Export from right clicking a component in the browser and Save Copy As have changed, is it a bug. I reported the problem Here where Save As and Export now both use the rather unuser friendly Export dialog that gives no clue about the folder contents on your local hard drive. Export from the browser used to use the standard Windows Save As dialog and was a lot more useful.

I complained about Export on the File menu changing a couple of years back and was informed it was to allow saving of non Fusion files to the cloud, personally didn't see that as very useful but might be for some. Trouble is that doesn't work, you can only save Fusion designs to the cloud so why was Export changed to use that unhelpful dialog. Save As saves to the cloud for Fusion designs, Export can only save Fusion designs to the cloud and other formats can only be saved locally so why not keep them separate and use the standard Windows Save As dialog for Export.

Thanks Mark

@HughesTooling I'm checking in with the UX team about this. I'm not totally certain on whether this is a bug or by design. Thanks for pointing out that other thread, it's helpful to have the report reference number handy. I'm just coming back after a bit of a break so, I'm a bit out of the loop. Remind me to buy you a beer if we ever meet in real life. 🙂

My observation is that we are actually gaining some functionality by changing the Save Copy As this way. The duality of that export command is a nice to have since you can save to the disk or just save to the cloud. The old Save dialog just let you save to the cloud.

I do see your point about not being able to see what is in the directory, locally. If you select the ... button, you can explore the directory.

If memory serves me regarding past functionality, we used to have some different dialogues depending on which export command you initiated (File menu, workspace, data panel, dashboard, etc..). Adding the cloud/local save options to the export dialog allowed us to unify the export commands across these different places. It is a bit odd that you select Save Copy As and then get an Export dialog.

Perhaps we are lumping in the Save Copy As command in with Export now. My best guess is that this is an intentional move, but I'm working to confirm that. I or someone from UX will circle back here as soon as I know more.
