laptop trackpad navigation - OSX

My most used navigation short cut is to hold the SHIFT button and stroke two fingers on the trackpad (MacBook Pro 15inch).

This effects the free rotation of the design. Super super useful.

Increasingly I find that the shortcut stops working and am obliged to use the screen icons. Super super annoying!

So far the only fix seems to be to relaunch F360.

Am I overlooking something? Anyone have any suggestions?

Or is this a bug that's been getting worse these past few weeks?

Try toggling Enter Fullscreen Mode/Exit Fullscreen Mode in the MacOS View dropdown menu. Does that change the behavior at all?

I hear various reports of UI/navigation issues, but the steps to reproduce are very elusive. If you have steps to reproduce the issue consistently, please share them as they will be useful.

You're right, I'm usually working in full screen mode.

Just tried toggling out/in of that a couple of times but didn't relieve the problem.

When I try shift + two finger drag there's no free rotation but (didn't mention before) zoom instead.

Afraid have never noticed a pattern to how this comes about, but the past few weeks (ie latest builds) it's enough I work for an hour and it will have happened.

In the past it would sometimes be specific to just one of the open file-windows but today all 3 open file-windows seem to share the same problem.

Surely other OSX trackpad users will have noticed something similar?

I'd be curious if you do NOT work in fullscreen mode if the issue occurs. Perhaps it is specific to trackpad/fullscreen. I usually bounce back and forth between using a mouse and a trackpad. I don't usually work in fullscreen mode either, but these tips may be a good clue to reproduce the issue. Thanks in advance for sharing any further tips or observations you have.

Here are a couple of data points:

1) Launched Fusion in full screen mode, opened 3 files. THEN quit full screen mode and worked for a bit. Quite soon (10 mins?) lost the use of the shift-two finger drag shortcut.

2) Launched Fusion in normal (not full screen) mode. Opened 3 files. Been working for a few hours now without problems (including laptop going to sleep / waking / using many other pieces of software).

Based on experience from the past few weeks boldly suggest that:

a) you're right, it's somehow linked to full screen mode;

b) there has been a deterioration of the problem over the past few versions of Fusion;

Will let you know if, working outside full screen mode, lose the shortcut again.

( On a laptop it's definitely better to work in FS. Not just because of the menu at the top but also because of the Dock (on the left in my case). Could set the Dock to auto-hide but prefer not to.)

One day later, just to add:

- have remained in normal screen mode (not full screen) and with the same files open and the interface continues to behave perfectly;

- now remember that there's ANOTHER interface problem that I've been getting (and am not seeing now): after using Fusion for a while, when panning (two finger trackpad drag) the interface seems to lose all sense of proportionality. In particular, one can be dragging and dragging and dragging and the design hardly moves at all. Historically my fix for this has been to quit the file and reopen it.

After quite a long period of utilisation have now finally seen some anomalies in laptop trackpad navigation whilst NOT in full screen mode.

Currently in one of my open files panning (two finger drag) doesn't work.

And in another open file two finger drag will pan in the horizontal direction. But two finger drag up-down results in a zoom!

These little details make all the difference between a perfect experience and an quietly rising sense of frustration, so if other people notice them too it would be good if they signalled it so the problems can be crushed.

Maybe many people regularly restart their computers and / or quit Fusion at the end of each session. But Mac OSX is so damned stable - and memory swapping to SSD so slick - on a laptop there's no need to restart anything. I restart the computer maybe every 3 weeks; relaunch Fusion basically when there's an update (or a CRASH)!

I ageee with some of your assessments. I know that this must have been tweaked recently because zooming works much better now.

The 2 Finger pan is really too slow. For use with the track pad I usually design non orthographic rather than perspective mode.

Vieport navigstion Issues are reduced when in orthographic mode, even when working with a mouse.

I also have this issue unfortunately on OSX on a MacbookPro using the trackpad. I'm not doing anything full screen. It seems to happen usually after alt-tabbing (or whatever you call that in OSX land).

It is quite annoying as the only fix is restarting fusion which isn't always convenient. Its been happening for maybe a couple of months

I rarely if ever use full screen mode and this happens all the time and makes using Fusion 360 extremely cumbersome. The only thing that consistently works is closing and restarting Fusion360. The problem is it takes quite a while to reload and open up all the CAD files I'm working on, and then I work for 20-30 minutes and the trackpad stops working again... Next to data corruption, fixing the use of the mouse/trackpad (or keyboard) would be high on my list of bugs that should be ruthlessly squashed 🙂

It's absolutely horrendous, given the cost of a subscription, that this app still doesn't reliably allow navigation with built-in or external touch pads.

Navigation is at the core of modeling productivity. While the development team has been off working in la la land for years on non-essential features, simple reliable touch pad navigation continues to be non-existent. Frankly, it's shameful.

This doesn't require detailed repeatable procedures in order to initiate a bug fix. I can take just about any MBP/iMac with a built-in or external pad, and demonstrate non-functioning pad navigation in 60 seconds. The common refrain from Autodesk employees is nothing more than kicking the can down the road until it becomes someone else's problem. Shameful.
