Hi ctscsmith,

Are you placing new dimensions, editing the location of existing dimensions, or both? For either case while you're dragging the dimension out and seeing the auto-spacing/snapping behavior, tap the Shift key once, that will enable free drag of the dimension. Tap it again to turn the snap spacing back on. There's a tooltip which suggests this, but on Mac the tooltips don't appear while the cursor is moving. If that doesn't do it for you please let me know.

Thanks,

Drafting Object Snap Points

Is there a shortcut key for disabling snap points in *Drafting* like there is in Modeling ('command' key for Mac)? Presently they are a bit 'overzealous' so to speak, and to slightly adjust a note or dimension, it must first be moved several inches away from the intended destination, then moved back, to avoid snapping to its original position or other undesired locations nearby. The snap points will often snag even with the cursor several screen/display inches from the snap point, which is highly excessive. As you may imagine, when a drawing begins to get populated with information it becomes a minefield of snap points. Even a toggle-switch setting to disable these points in Drafting would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the Fusion Community!

In the September update, the dimension stacking functionality was released.

https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/blog/september-28-2017-update-whats-new/

In the blog post, there's a quick tip:

QUICK TIP: If you hold down the SHIFT key, you’ll get free placement and override the snapping behavior.

Does that help?

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply,

At least on the Mac version of the software, no key press affects snap behavior in drafting as I can tell (now, in model sketches the 'command' key does toggle snaps off momentarily). It's mostly an issue for fine-position of dimensions or notes for greatest clarity, but can be quite bothersome in fully populated drawings.

Is there an on/off setting button in a toolbar/menu somewhere I could alternately use? The snaps are nice for setting up the drawing, but would be turned off for the last few adjustments.

Tom

I am having the same issue. It is incredibly frustrating to have to drag dimensions way out and back again. The baseline dimension works ok for simple things, but I often need more control than that. Unfortunately, a lot of the world still runs on prints, and I am so far very disappointed with the drafting environment.

I tried using the Shift toggle for the snap points, and it has no effect on my Mac system. The dimension still erratically snaps as far as several inches away from my cursor location. If this feature is supposed to be active, it would appear to have a potential bug at this time.

Tom

Hi Tom,

Are you seeing this in all drawings or just a certain drawing or views? Can you try with a very basic design (box) and see if it repro's there? This is working for me so it could be something specific to your drawing. If it is drawing-specific, would it be possible for you to export and send me that drawing so I can take a look? From the data panel, click the version number for the drawing > Open Details on Web, then in the web page click the down arrow button in the upper right > Fusion 360 Archive and send it to me (christopher.miller@autodesk.com).

The expected behavior is that after starting the Dimension command and selecting an edge or 2 points, you can drag the dimension out and the dimension preview should snap to regular intervals, 10mm for ISO drawings, or 3/8" for ASME. Tapping Shift once (not holding it down) should toggle the snapping off. If you're seeing dimensions jump erratically something sounds off. It's possible some specific geometry may be confusing the dimension tool so it thinks the correct offset needs to be larger.

Thanks,
