Thanks for your kind attention and your solution. It will work for me. Now that I know that dragging a material to a component in the browser, I'll use that as my go-to method. It also makes me think that I should look for other things that might be doable in the browser instead of in a design window.

I have discovered a number of things that weren't obvious at first or, intuitive. One example arose when I had extruded a number of parts from a sketch, then did a number of unrelated things, and went back to extrude yet more parts from the original sketch. Finding timeline items which were derived from the sketch was something of a chore, them being scattered out across the timeline. I simply dragged those items across the timeline so that all of the stuff derived from the sketch were contiguous with the sketch. Makes my design much easier to manage.

I will be posting more questions as they come up. Thanks again.

I activate appearance; select the component I wish to change; drag a material to that component; it changes a bunch of components in addition to the one I am trying to change.

I am including a screencast of the problem below

The screencast didn't make it to your post, but I'll make a wild guess. Are you talking about multiple instances of the same component? If so, and you drag a material onto a body in the graphics area, it will apply to all instances. If you want to apply the appearance only to a single component instance, you need to drag it to a component, usually in the browser.

Here is a screencast:

No, it is a one-of-a-kind component. I’m including a link to the screencast here:

https://vimeo.com/246608570

Jeff,

So I dragged a material to the component in the browser tree and it worked. Why doesn't the intuitive technique of dragging to the component in the design widow work? There is only one of these components in the design, so there should be no conflict.

@wilburg,

I have not had a chance to review your whole video yet, will do that tomorrow. But, to answer your question, it's not a question of their being only one instance of the component. It's that a Body and a Component are different objects. The Body is shared by all instances of a component, so any change to it is also shared, whether it is an appearance, or a hole.

I do, however, agree that the UI is confusing/misleading. I think a better UI would be to have a 3rd option for the Appearance command: Components. Instead, Fusion today has both lumped together in the dialog, and this results in the behavior you see in my screencast.

There is another way to achieve this, but it's a bit obscure. If you set your selection filter to just Components, you can drag the appearance onto components in the graphics area and get the same results as if you drag it to the browser.
