I just did a clean install of windows 10 and installed Fusion 360 to edit my STL models that I want to 3D print. I'm having endless issues with this software locking up doing basically anything and having to be forced closed. Does this software even use local PC hardware or is it all cloud based now? My machine is MORE than powerful enough to run this software and edit these very small and basic STL files but this issue persists. Not to mention it appears to have a memory leak, I'm currently watching it steadily climb to over 44gb of RAM usage while it's entirely locked up.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately that doesn't really help much. The software has an entire section dedicated to mesh creation and editing, it allows for importing of meshes and allows for the conversion of mesh to solid body, so to claim it isn't a "mesh editing program" is incorrect in my opinion. It's a core function of the software.

The issue of the locking up and freezing is still a huge issue for me. The CPU usage, GPU usage are basically zero, SSD usage zero and RAM usage just steadily climbs infinitely until a system crash. Typically this happens most frequently, but not limited to, importing a mesh and converting it to a body. In the past with less powerful hardware I've been able to import, convert and edit meshes with over 1 million triangles, now it just crashes 100% of the time with even the most basic mesh files and I'm running 128gb 3600mhz ram, a Ryzen 5950x and RTX 4090 with a Samsung 2tb 980 Pro NVME drive.

If you do there are tools to convert meshed into Breps that might help editing meshes. If you are using the hobby\personal license you don't have these tools so you can only convert to a faceted model and editing will not be fun to work with! You could use the meshes as a reference to build native models. But if you just want to work with meshes as meshes Fusion's not really the best tool, not what I'd use.

It's every mesh imported into Fusion360 basically. I'll link the most recent file that's giving issues, but it isn't limited to just this one file.

https://www.printables.com/model/113692-aerogarden-seed-pod-for-75-gallon-aquariums

I've been using the hobby license for years and haven't had these issues until the last year or so and it seems to be getting more frequent. As I mentioned, I've been able to import, convert and edit STL files with over 1 million triangles in the past, now I can't even work with the most basic STL files without it locking up and basically triggering what I can only explain as a memory leak as it soaks up all the RAM in the system until a crash.

I've attached the STL file to this reply, and also uploaded it to Thingiverse. Whether it's a 3mf or stl I'm still haveing issues with memory leak, locking up, "failed compute" etc.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6565585/files

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I am able to open, and convert the aeropod to a solid body. So far, I'm not seeing unexpected or excessive RAM use. Despite having 73k faces, it converts in about 20 seconds.

What other workflows do you do with files like this? You mentioned a failed compute, which requires a parametric feature. I'm happy to try out other aspects of your workflow with this file.

I looked for other reports of excessive RAM use, and could only find reports from Win8.1 users who needed compatibility mode, or graphics issues. Are your graphics drivers up to date? Anything special about your windows installation?

I agree with @HughesTooling that Fusion is not a mesh editing software. I use Mesh editing software frequently (Blender, Autodesk Meshmixer, SideFX Houdini) and if you did, you'd likely agree!

Also, once you have converted that mesh into a faceted Solid Body it is obviously not a mesh anymore 😉

You can then only edit the object with the solid and surface modeling tools and that isn't mesh editing anymore.

The high facet could often leads to a multitude of problems.
