F3D files in the tutorials

When I download the F3D files from the tutorial, I don't get any F3D files.

I am in this lesson;

Getting Started for Students / Introduction to 3D Modeling / Lesson 2: Create a new cloud project, upload and save a 3D model.

When I try to upload the file in Fusion 360, there is no F3D file in the folder I downloaded from the lesson.

Welcome to the Fusion 360 Community!

That seems a bit strange - I was able to download it no problem. See the attached file.

Just to check, does your computer automatically unzip files? To be honest, this is what that looks like. If you were to change the .f3d extension, to a .zip extension and unzip that file, your screenshot is what you would see. Perhaps a .f3d file got associated as a .zip in your computer and is being automatically unzipped?

James,

The files are downloaded as zipped folders. I have to extract the files from the zip folder. Some work, some don't.

Note in the screen shot below that there is a Bodies and Components Example zip folder and a Bodies and Components Example file folder.

When the file folder is opened, there is a an F3d file there.

Other zip folders extract the mess you saw in the OP screen shot.

Hi @Anonymous,

This definitely seems specific to something in your environment, it is just tough to tell what. For instance on both Windows and Mac, it works just fine for me on the download.

One quick workaround would be, in file explorer, click the file and select Rename. Delete the .zip extension and put a .f3d and hit OK when prompted if it is okay to change the file format. This should successfully work.

In the meantime can you check the file association for .f3d files per this guide's instruction here?

Some zip folders do not come with a .zip or an .f3d file extension. In the case of no file extension, adding .f3d does not change anything.

In the case where I am not getting the .f3d file in my downloads, changing file extensions or app association does not work because THERE IS NO .F3D FILE IN THE DOWNLOAD.

I think i found a solution. I will lay it out.

This is how the link appears in tutorials

It shows up in my download dialouge as a .zip

It shows up in my save dialouge as this

When i save that i get this.

Here is the extraction dialouge

That extracts to this

That folder contains stuff that does not work

Here is the fix. At the save dialouge, add the .f3d file extension

That will give you this, and it works fine.

Hi,

I am having the same problem where the f3d file is downloaded as a zip folder. Additionally, some f3d files are saved as f3d files

such as Open_Close_Save, however, trigger_with_mechanics does not. I have followed the method you showed where I rename the folder when prompted to save (by adding .f3d) but this still does not work for me?

I was having the same problem until I added .f3d during the save as step. Now my computer stopped recognizing the file as zip format and sees it as a fusion 360 file.

@ James Youmatz, thank you for posting this file! It seems to be missing from at least the first set of tutorials that refer to it.
