Hi there

See below for a screencast.

Disappearing sketch

I have a few components where each have its own sketch. I want to project sketch features of a component into another's sketch. It has worked up to now. When I select the sketch in the new component to edit it, one of the sketches disappears completely. Its just annoying at this stage, but it happens often enough that I decided to make a screen cast. What am I doing wrong or is it a bug?

Thank you

@bergie5737,

This is a fundamental aspect of parametric/history-based design. When you edit a sketch or a feature, anything that was created after that sketch is <STRIKE>not</STRIKE> hidden. The main reason for this is to prevent cyclic dependencies in your design (sketch 1 refers to sketch2, but sketch2 also refers to sketch1). So, you can only refer to objects created before a sketch you are editing. Think of edit sketch and edit feature as time travel. They take you back to the time at which the sketch was first created.

In your case, sketch4 was created after that sketch, so it is rolled back.

Sometimes, you can reorder the sketches or features in the timeline to change history, but that will depend on whether there is any dependency between them. Again, Fusion is trying to prevent you from creating cycles.

Jeff

[edit] corrected a bad mistake in this response. See the strikethrough...

Hi there

Thank you for the quick response. What you described is exactly my issue. That makes sense why some of my designs went haywire.I see now in the timeline how it got wrong. The features I want (sketch 4) should be able to move or else I will just add a new sketch.

Maybe another issue: Why will the saved version get messed up and missing all sketches after trying to edit a sketch out of the timeline? I this case, I had to revert back to V7 after restarting Fusion as V8 and V9 did not even have "sketch 4" at all. I was about to show add screenshot of the missing sketch, when I saw your post. To sum up. V7 - sketch is there, V8 and V9, sketch is missing.

When you say that sketch4 is missing from from V8 and V9, are you sure that it is totally missing, or is it possible that sketch4 is just to the right of the end of design marker, as in your original question? Look at the timeline, does it look like this at all? The end of design marker is shown by the red arrow. If there are features, especially sketches, to the right of the end of design marker, one of them could be sketch4. Worth looking into.

I had the same issue. I got around the whole dissapearing/ timeline issue by doing the following:

1. Edit the sketch with the geometries that you want to bring to the new sketch. Highlight the whole sketch and COPY. (Or just highlight the parts of the sketch you need.)

2. Now just go to the current sketch you are working on and PASTE . All the geometries are now on your new sketch.
