Can't select offset

Hi, I'm new to Fusion 360. I've imported an SVG file, and I've created two offsets. After I created the first one, my sketch becomes locked, and then I can't select either offset. I can only select the original body. So I cant extrude, because I can't even select the offsets. I can't find any help on the web. Thanks...

You need to attach your model so the Forum users can see what the problem is. If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

OK, Here is the f3d file. I've started over a bunch of times. I import the svg, scale it to the size I want, and then Modify-offset, and as soon as I create the first offset, it locks. This time I tried to make the second offset 3mm, and it wouldn't make it. It would only go 2mm for some reason. And then each time I am unable to select the offsets to extrude them.

Hi,

1. SVG are normally fixed after import (green).
2. when offsetting curves, external or internal offsets can lead to self-intersections depending on the geometry.
3. if you say "locked" and are referring to the red lock symbol in the browser, this only means that the sketch is completely defined.
This is also the case, for example, if the lines are fixed (green).

I guess I am correlating the fact that the red lock symbol shows up on the left on "sketch" when I make the offset with the fact that I can't select the offsets and extrude them. So, that may not be the case, is what you're saying? So, I still don't know why I can't select the offsets to extrude them. Thank you!

1. follow the actions in the screencast

2. You can also work with thin extrusions instead of offsets.
Show me what you want to achieve, then I can show you the way with thin extrusion.

I'm making a cookie cutter. The cutter wall is 1mm thick, extruded down 13mm, and then the 3mm offset on top is extruded down 1.5 mm for the part you press on. Here is a photo of another one I made with no problems. I'm not sure why the same principles aren't working for this one.

I'm trying to follow your first video. (Thank you so much for making that, by the way!) I am good until you snip that piece out because your curser is just sitting there, and it just disappears. I did it with the trim tool. And then I can't tell what you choose next to connect the two pieces. It looks like you hover over several tools.

Oh wait....I think I understand now. I'm going to try. You break and redraw all the sections that have a hollow looking spline point? Let me see if that works.

Omg, it worked. Sort of. I actually was able to select the offests and extrude them. The only problem was that it only let me make the second offset 2mm instead of 3mm. It said it made no geometry or something when I tried to input 3mm. But this is better than before. Here is my new file. Does it look ok? Do you know why it wouldn't let me make the second offset 3mm? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi,

This is exactly what you can do without offset using the "Thin Extrude" option, as I showed in my contribution 7 for another variant.

Okay, thank you! I will try to understand it from the video. It looks like it might be easier, but it's hard to follow in some places since I have no idea what I'm doing yet. LOL. I appreciate your help!

That is a bad combination!

imported geometry accounts for a large number of problems that People new to CAD encounter.

How about trying to use the imported SVG as a visual guideline and trace the shape with a spline?

(Might have been suggested already, I did not read previous posts.)

Hahaha...that made me laugh. No, it was not suggested, but I had tried that with another shape I was having trouble with, and it didn't solve the problem. There was something about the geometry of that shape it didn't like. It's possible it would work with this one. Just because of where I'm at, I have a much easier time drawing in Inkscape than in Fusion. I have made about 7 cookie cutters. Sometimes it works great, and sometimes I have problems that I can't figure out. I am not experienced enough yet to understand why it works on one shape and not another. Thanks for the suggestion!
