However, the extrusion also shows up in Middle4:1, Middle3:1, Middle2:1 and Middle1:1, whether I tell the extrusion tool to stop at the back side of Middle5:1 or tell it to go a set distance (0.3" in the picture for illustration, but I really want to make a through hole and go completely through both pieces).

If I can do that, then the inner ring will get extruded through all parts.

I am creating a layered project that I intend to cut on my laser cutter. I created one layer and then copied it into separate, unlinked components and then stacked them. Now I want to extrude a hole through just two layers, but when I do, the extrusion also shows up in all of the other components. I've attached a screen capture. In the picture, the top visible layer was created from a different sketch. The second layer down is the top-most of the copied components, the next one visible is the bottom-most of the copied components. I've hidden the intervening layers. Each component is 0.200" thick, so the selected extruded cut should go all the way through the top layer and stop half-way through the next layer. Rather than just cutting through the layers I've chosen, it mirrors the cut onto the other copied layers, even though they are ostensibly independent. This can be seen in the pocket on the lower layer, which shouldn't be there.

I've tried copying the layers two different ways. First, I created a new component, chose 'move/copy' and then copied the existing component into the new component. Second, I tried selecting the component, choosing 'copy' and then 'paste new'. In each case, I get a new component that the indicator in the browser says is independent, but insists on mirroring any extrusions or cuts made after the copy. All of the videos and other tutorials I've looked at seem to say that my workflow is the right one, so what am I missing?

Think you'll need to share the design so we can see how you've made your design. From the image can't really tell what's going on, have you got a component active because the timeline doesn't seem to have any features that create geometry although it looks like you have a lot of base features.

@Anonymous:

I'm not sure if this answers your question but in the extrude window there is a little dropdown arrow at the bottom of the window, that section shows which bodies/objects will be affected by the action, just uncheck the ones you don't want cut:

Does this answer your question?

I tried checking/unchecking the boxes. When I open that dropdown, the only bodies that appear are the two I've selected, yet the extrude feature still appears on the other components. If I uncheck the Middle5:1 component, the extrude feature also disappears from Middle1:1.

@Anonymous:

I am going to venture a guess that inside your 'Middle5:1' you have another 'Middle1:1', I am guessing it is identical to the one listed in the component list and both 1:1's are visible. Expand your 'Middle5:1', you'll see if you have a 'Middle1:1' tucked away inside another component in there. The symbol next to the 'Middle5:1' means it has another component inside, whereas the symbol next to the first 'Middle1:1' means it is a component that does not contain another component.

Maybe post another screenshot with 'Middle1:1' expanded..

Of course that happens!

You have 5 instances of Middle1 in your assembly structure. Meaning the data set each of these instances point to is the same. You make a hole in one of them it's appears in all 5 instances.

I've made a screencast a good while ago on copying and pasting bodies and components in Fusion 360.

That might help clarify few things.,
