Yeah I figured that was a possible solution but yeah... quite difficult. I'm glad that someone agrees this is a "bug" or a minor oversight at least. Thanks for the reply

Here I have some nested cylinders with a semi circle groove cut into the OD of each layer. I have applied a paint appearance to the "trough" of each groove however when the part is given a physical material of glass you cannot see the paint color through the rear of the glass.

To put it simply, if I "paint" a sheet of glass on one side I cannot see the painted surface through the opposite side, the color disappears.
In the first image notice the appearance of the yellow/red grooves at 12 o'clock vs the blue/green grooves at 6 o'clock. In the final image you can see how this is causing a problem for me with my render. I want to see the painted groove along its entire path.

I agree that it should work since this is what you would see in real life. You can work around the issue by making the area you want to change the color to and show through a new body and make its material a different color. In the screen capture below, I have a plate with the material declared as glass and a very thin new body of a different color material on one side. The screen capture from the rear of the plate is shown. I agree my model is very simple to yours and making very thin bodies along your grooves will be a lot more difficult but it is a workaround until they fix the issue.

No resolution to this? Seems weird you can't tell it easily which side to be the front/back.
