Graphics driver seems to be outdated warning?

Hello,

I have a warning message at the top of my screen that says "Your graphics driver seems to be outdated, which could cause unstable behavior" I have gone and updated the drivers, I have gone into settings and changed it to Performance, I have checked the box "limit effects to optimize performance and I still have the same issue, when zoomed in to my work, fusion freezes up and takes a minute to execute any command. Can someone help me determine what I need to do to fix this issue. I'm not very computer literate, I do know I have a video card that is split for 2 screens, I don't know if that's useful info.

Hi @Anonymous,

thanks for posting! Have you restarted your machine after downloading and installing the latest drivers for your AMD Radeon card? If that does not help:

Right-click Fusion 360 desktop icon. Go to Properties -> Compatibility -> Compatibility mode -> Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7,
Launch Fusion 360 and go to your Profile name -> Preferences -> General -> Graphics driver. Change Auto-select to DirectX 9 and restart Fusion 360,
Download and install the updates for Windows 7.

thanks for checking the suggestions. I just had another look at your screenshots and noticed that your GPU driver date is 08/04/2015. I can see there are some newer ones on this site: https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-hd/ati-radeon-hd-5000-series/ati-radeon-hd-5450. Could you test that first?

I would also like you to check the following:

Right-click the Fusion 360 Icon on your Desktop
Check if there is an option "Run with graphics processor..."

Hello,

There is no option to run with graphics processor. there is also no newer gpu drivers updates for win7 64. seems like they have stopped support for my graphics card. I have ordered a new card, I should see it next week. I will install and update.

Okay, I just installed a new graphics card. Radeon R5 220. installed the drivers directly from AMD (current driver date was 2015)..... Same problem.

Any more ideas?

Go to question mark in the top right corner of the user interface -> Support and Diagnostics -> Graphics Diagnostic -> Copy to Clipboard.

I just noticed that the error message is gone now however any operation takes several minutes to complete, for example, in model, I wanted to edit my sketch by trimming a line and 1 trim froze the program for 2 minutes.

your graphics specifications seem to meet the System requirements for Autodesk Fusion 360.

Can you observe this behavior for a specific design only? Does it occur for designs started from scratch?

I have noticed it on my current design. something I created from scratch. I will open another design now and edit a sketch to see if it acts the same.

Hi @Anonymous,

I had another look at your graphics diagnostic and I can see that GPU Driver API is still registering as DirectX 11.0. Does switching it to DirectX 9.0 improve the performance?

WOW, That change made the most difference! almost all the freezing and twitching has gone away! Is there anything else you recommend? Thanks!

It's 2:15am. I off to sleep have to be up in a few hours...LOL

Hmm.....I am disappointed in AMD, I don't understand why there would not be a current driver? I just bought that card from Best Buy.

What is the minimum graphics card you recommend?

Alright, I called AMD and I installed the latest drivers, a 2016 version. I am still having the problem of fusion freezing when trying to edit a sketch that is zoomed in.

Just for kicks I opened fusion 360 on my dell laptop. win7 service pack 1. I made all the same changes as told above and I have the same result, it freeze when zoomed in and editing a sketch? Any other ideas?

side note, all my other programs work perfectly while fusion 360 is frozen on both my desktop and laptop.

I just opened up another design that I created from scratch and fusion does not seem to freeze up on that design? what is your thoughts on that?

Hi @Anonymous,

apologies for the late reply. While we don't have a specific recommendations for a graphics card (see this article: Recommended graphic card and driver for Fusion 360), I usually suggest a dedicated one with at least 2 GB GDDR RAM.

To clarify: you are using Windows 7, SP1 on both stations with the same graphics card model and driver and you adjusted the settings by following the suggestions from my initial reply - is that correct?

Restarting Fusion 360 (when you change the program settings) or your computer (when you update the drivers or change the settings in the control panel) may be the last step to resolve the issue - was this the case here?

If the behavior is still inconsistent, you might try some more tips about how to improve the performance are listed the following knowledge articles:

In particular, I would suggest:

modifying your Windows settings as described in the last part of the first article,
changing the screen resolution.
