Problem with insert derived components

Hello all,

I was reluctant to ask about this issue, as I am so "green" that I may not even ask the right questions, but I can see a way around it. So here it comes...

I have in a couple of instances used "Save As..." to create a variant of a component without a link. Say file "Base" and "Spawn". Then on a fresh design call it "Target", I "Insert Derive" them both and chose a component from each. Later I have modified them, so the "Target" design asked to refresh the derives. But once refreshed, the derived objects in the timeline are pointing to the wrong file, and I noticed missing derived component. I have recorded a screencast to try to explain it better.

I appreciate any suggestions to get it to work again as I have multiple instances of this behavior.

Have you tried going back and re-linking the files?

Would you mind sharing this group of files with me? You're right that this is looking a little weird. I'd like to poke around and see if I can figure out what's going on.

Sure, the files with the derive issues are

The original starting design: x-end-both_M3

This was a "save as" from the previous file, at one point, and then modified, no links to the original design (did not know of derive at the time): x-end-both_M3-stops

These are used as some sort of library of pieces, here just for the sake of completion:

Fasteners

Hardware

I also have the archive at hand, just to figure out how to share it.

Ok, after playing with this for a while I think this is an issue we need to fix on our end. I'm talking to our team to start getting this fixed.

In the meantime, here are a few workarounds:

If you are ok with losing the timeline from the "saved as" part:

1. Derive the "saved as" part into a new file

2. Break the link to the original file

3. Roll back the timeline in the assembly file

4. Delete the insert derive event from the timeline

5. Insert the new file into the assembly file.

From then on, when you make changes you will have to save the placeholder file with the updated part as well for it to update into the assembly file.

Another solution if you don't want to lose your timeline would be to:

1. Create a new file, derive component "A" into file.

2. Do the same for component "B"

- now you have the original A and B files as well as two new files with A and B derived into them. -

3. Roll back timeline in Assembly file

4. Derive New "A" and "B" documents into the file.

5. Delete insert derive events from timeline that link directly to original files.

(In this workaround you will have so update the links in the middle files in order to update the link in the assembly file)

Let me know if either of these workflows was successful or if you would like me to make a video to work through this.

I was considering what you suggested, but I opted for rebuilding all from scratch, avoiding "Save As..." and "Insert derive" as much as possible in the future.

I have the same problem like @paul.orasanu

I just wanted to ask if you already fixed the problem, or when will the problem be fixed?

The behavior is really weird and I don't know how to fix it.

I will try you workaround with safing the timeline, if its to complicated could you please make a screencast for that workflow?

I just figured out that in my case I can't use the derive option because I have to make copies of ma assemblies.

the only way that I see is that when I made a copy to insert the copied assembly into current design and not to derive the copied assembly because the drive causes a lot of trouble. Am I right at this point or is there another solution at this moment?

We're working on a fix for this, but it is currently still an issue. If you want to share your assembly with me, I can have a look and make a screencast or give some advice on how to repair.

If you share a public link to your parent design, that would work best.

Thanks for sending me the file. Can you point me to the problematic files? What is the workflow you are currently trying to achieve, and where is the issue exactly? Creating a screencast might help, then I can focus on the area in the file that is not working.
