Edit sketch in copied component

I copied a component and I want to make design changes to the new sketch, but when I select "edit sketch" in the new component, the corresponding sketch in the original component is activated instead. The new component was "pasted new" and moved to another plane so should be independent. When I roll the mouse pointer over the original and copied sketch, or turn them on/off, they appear to be independent and on their own planes, but editing always goes straight to the original sketch in the original sketch plane. What am I missing? How do I edit the copy instead of the original? Thanks.

Hi @obarnes,

thanks for posting! I believe that the sketch you are trying to edit may belong to the top component and is edited for both the first and the other (pasted as new) component. To avoid this, move the sketch into the sub-component before copying it and pasting as new.

The workflow is as follows:

Create the first sub-component
Unfold the browser tree to make sure that the bodies and sketches within the component are indeed within it. Drag them if necessary.
Right-click the created first component -> Copy
Right-click the top component -> Paste as New
Unfold the created other component
Edit the sketch within it.

Thank you, but it appears I am doing essentially the same thing as you demonstrate but with a different result. I did a screencast to show what I'm doing. Where am I missing the trick?

Today I followed the EXACT same sequence as before, but now the correct sketch/ body is affected as it should be. It's really hard to fix what's not broken... The video I made yesterday proves the issue I was having was real, but today it is not an issue. Maybe sometimes the solution is to just close 360 and try again the next day? This doesn't do much for my faith in the platform, I must say. I suppose I'll have to call this one resolved.

In your screencast you did something different. When you created the copy and moved it there is a save position in the toolbar, same as @pawel.potyrala example. But when you edited the sketch you didn't exit before running Extrude, this canceled the Move\Save position so the component moved back to where it was created. A problem or feature depending on how you look at it is, if you edit a sketch that's at the start of a components timeline and go straight to an extrude without exiting, the extrude will be created after the sketch in the timeline not at the end of the timeline. This will mean the new feature will also be created where the component was when the sketch was created.

If you go back and watch @pawel.potyrala 's screencast you'll see he only modifies the sketch, he doesn't create a new feature.

looking at the explanation from @HughesTooling (thank you for joining!) I believe I did not get straight to the point in my previous post - apologies for that!

You might have been editing the correct sketch from the component pasted as new from the very beginning, but the way it is displayed in Fusion 360 could suggest it's the original sketch. The Move command for components is not captured in the timeline by design.

After moving the newly pasted component, you can Capture its Position. Note that once you edit the sketch included in the newly pasted component, the history marker is rolled back to before the Capture Position (i.e. Move) command. As a result, the edited sketch from the newly pasted component shares the position with the original sketch from the original component.

Here's another screencast (pay attention to the origin for the top component):

To avoid confusion, you can hide the original component while editing the sketch from the newly pasted one.

If you edit a sketch of a copied component you're traveling back in time. This is visualized by the ghosted icons in the timeline.

And at this time no movement and no capture position was applied. And because of this the component jumps back to the original position (origin).

You can avoid this, if you create a joint before the sketch is created. So travel back in time, use e.g. the origin of the component as a joint point (component 2 in the screencast) or create a plane and a sketch as a custom joint origin (component 3 in the screencast) and create the joint as needed. If you now edit the sketch it component stays at the joint origin and does not move back.

Hi, I appreciate this, but it has sailed right over my head. I'll have to study this a bit and find out what a joint is before it makes any sense to me, then I am sure it will be useful.

I think this is the key that I was missing. I wondered what the capture position thing was there for and now it make sense. Calling this resolved, and thanks to all who helped with this.
