Quick help on threads

I'm struggling to figure which thread I should pick from the list for a normal 1/4"-20 Thread Size Hex Head Screw (McMaster-Carr p/n 2620A537 for example).

Should I drill first a 1/4" hole or smaller?

Typical drill size for a 1/4-20 hole is a #7 drill. (.201")

I'd recommend for you to look up and/or download a tap drill chart. That will give you most of the info you need.

To better answer your question. Just start with a point and use the hole feature to make a tapped hole.

Thanks for the reply.

I meant inside Fusion. What diameter hole I should drill on my part and then, from the available options on the thread type drop-down, which one to choose for a coarse 1/4 - 20 thread

ANSI Unified Screw Threads is your answer. You really don't even need to pre-model the minor, the data that the hole wizard produces is correct geometry in every instance I've double checked it on

Are you asking about IRL or in the Fusion model? If you are asking about inside Fusion make a 1/4 hole and Fusion will default to a 1/4 thread. When the thread is applied it will have the correct drill size hole if you use cosmetic thread.

If you use the hole tool you can set the thread in the dialog.
