BOUNDING BOX vs CAM SET UP

Good Morning,

I've noticed a disconnect between the bounding box sizes that are posted in the component Property dialogue box, and the "bounding box" that is generated in a CAM set up dictating zero stock on all sides. This appears to happen mostly on organic shapes as I've seen this issue repeat itself on multiple occasions. Please see attached photos and please let me know if there is something I'm missing. The bounding box in the Property dialogue is an extremely useful tool, however, as it is now, it's unreliable.

Really need to see a design with the problem. One thought, is the part aligned with the document origin planes and is the datum in the CAM setup aligned with the document origin planes?

Hello Mark,

Part origin and cam origins are in alignment.

I first noticed this issue when creating a new design from imported data from customers during the quoting phase of a project. Our typical steps are usually as follows:

Import .step or parasolid file
Set our units to inches
Capture design history
Create new components from bodies that are in file
Rotate/Align part properly to component origin (as usually parts are thrown in outer space upon import, which is typically a product of export from whatever native software they use)
Check Bounding Box in Property dialogue
Double check overall length, width, and height after creating a set up with zero stock on all sides.

Where Bounding Box is critical is when our quoting department receives the files for evaluation. We've purchased a seat specifically for them. They are not trained in doing CAM set ups and utilize the Bounding Box feature to gain information on part size that is crucial to our quoting process.

What file type are you trying to attach? For blocked file types add them to a zip file.

It's a .f3z file exported thru FUSION.

I tried sending a zip file as well and I receive the 100% uploaded message at the bottom of the screen, however, it prompts me back to this page, indicating an unsuccessful post.

Any other suggestions?

How many linked parts are there? Could you break the link to the linked parts, export as an f3d then undo the break link. One thought on the zip not uploading is what size is the file?

File size is aprox 26 MB. Zip file was aprox the same.

Yes definitely something wrong with the bounding box in the model workspace. Pretty sure the bounding box is calculated off a mesh so probably it's not fine enough. @jeff_strater What do you think.

Rhino returns this.

I've attached a python script that will create a sketch in the root directory. The script was a demo I found somewhere a while ago, I've set the mesh tolerance to 0.00001cm. Still a small error but a lot closer. Info here on adding a script.

Thank you for the feedback!

I added the script/add-in per the instructions via the link he attached. The bounding box that is now created is a lot more accurate than the box outputted in the Property dialogue box. Thank you for the assistance with this!

Would you happen to know if/where there may be a shortcut, or if this function is in a drop down menu somewhere? As of right now, the only way to create a bounding box would be to go to Tools/Add-ins/Bounding Box, and then click on RUN. I can most definitely navigate thru these steps, but I was just wondering if there is a quicker means of activating it.

The script would need converting to an add in. Not too good at programing with python in Fusion, might be worth asking if someone in the API forum might be able to convert it, maybe even have it output a box rather than a sketch as well.
