that is likely a different issue. The negative dimension problem is very specific, because it will flip back and forth in a repeatable way.

When I select a component and copy / paste. It pastes a linked copy in my project as expected.
However, when I paste new, no new component or copy appears, it just moves the original component around.

Hi,

enable component color tool and create some components.
Now you can test the behavior of paste new*.

paste vs. paste new
1. > primary component
2. > other without itselve

* Important : move component after paste

günther

RANT First wish people would use the photo option to embed pictures, trying to view 2 different pictures with the useless forum viewer is a pain. Better still wish the forum would auto embed pictures, who really wants them attached or at least ask if the attached picture should be embeded. RANT OVER.

There is something odd going on in the OP's example, if you look at the second picture the top component is active but no new component has been created. I've played around a bit but can't get the same behaviour, @us.shadow.op have you tried saving, close Fusion and restart then try again?

Actually the second image doesn't look right as it's the dialog for Copy/Move, not the one you'd get from paste new.

Yeah I left it that way because thats what it defaulted to and changing it to components did nothing.
I'll upload a video shortly showing the issue because the copy -> paste new works with some components in the project but not others, the images can't convey this well.

One tip, make sure you're not pasting back into the source component. You can Paste into the source component but you can't Paste New.

aha. Proving the old saying: A picture is worth 1000 words, a video is worth 10,000, and the model is worth 100,000...

You have to look really closely, but there is an error that flashes by at 0:14 in the video below:

How Paste New works is: Fusion copies the selected component's features, and dumps them into a new component. Then, it invokes Move, selecting the new component. What is happening in this case is the copy operation failed, but the Move command still gets invoked anyway. Because there is no new component to select, it goes back to its default setting of "Bodies". You can see the same problem if you do "Save Copy As" of that same component, then open it in a new tab and Compute All. We will look at why the fillet fails. It seems a strange case. I did notice that the Copy/Paste Bodies feature also fails in the original as well as the copy. Not sure if that is related or not, but, in general, it's good to get all those errors/warnings fixed as soon as they happen.

The plot thickens. I did finally trace this down to, essentially, a problem that exists with negative dimensions in sketch. Fusion sketch does not behave well with negative dimensions. This is causing the sketch to flip, which is causing the fillet to fail, which is causing the Paste New to fail. Sort of like the "for want of a nail" proverb: For_Want_of_a_Nail.

Here is a video (with audio) explaining this chain reaction:

Thats kinda funny because a buddy and I originally posted about the flipping issue in another forum post that never got any responses.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-api-and-scripts/flip-the-direction-of-distance-dimension/m-p/8853514

Though for him the flip occurs with non-negative values as well.

that is likely a different issue. The negative dimension problem is very specific, because it will flip back and forth in a repeatable way.

When I copy a coil component & Paste (it) New, the new "unlinked" copy permits me to "Edit Feature" and change the new coil's defining parameters. But I seem to lose the ability to edit the features of the *parent* coil. Strongly suggesting that the two coils do in fact remain linked in a parent-child relationship. What's going on?

Why is this marked as solved?

It's 2022 and I just ran into the same problem.

The Answer marked as solution does not solve anything at all.
