Combine line segments

After I scan an image and use Inkscape to create the SVG file I get piece of the design made up of sometimes hundreds of small segments as shown in this image. Is there any way to group those into one line?

You can use the method outlined in the Blog Article and Video to remove all the segments. I would demonstrate on your model but you did not supply it.

This image shows what the finished part is supposed to look like. I was able to extrude it but in the simulation it won't include the more complex parts. I think this may be due to the hundreds of little segments in those parts.

I agree, using my method will take some time but the the result will be a very smooth entity. Another advantage with the result is that the edges can be very easily selected for fillets, chamfers or any other edge operation. I applied the process to the large S and the G in your sketch just to show you the results. Model attached.

This as far as I got last night before responding to you. By the time I go back and forth between the video and the design for all these parts I should memorize the process. Now, what I need is the parts like the R and A to be the cut outs of the extrusion. Are these bodies just a necessary creation to simplify the shapes? When I finish with the end result be an extrusion like the image I sent?

The end result will be a sketch profile that you can extrude, sweep, loft or use any other solid modeling process on. The process was documented to simply remove the hundreds of segments in a lot of models to improve edge quality and allow for easy filleting of other edge operation. There may be other methods but this is the one I came up with.

I got very frustrated with that process. Some of the shapes worked and others didn't. I will go back and work on that more, but in the meantime I simple started with a fresh insert of the SVG file and traced the parts. When I select the green sketch I get only that sketch. When I select either the letters or the outline sketches everything is selected. I've worked a long time trying to find open loops or extra lines, but I haven't found a reason for this.

BTW: Thanks for putting up with my novice questions.

Hi,

1. Scale the body ( non uniform) instead of the sketch

2. When it comes to the (independent) elements within individual letters (A,R..) you have to connect them to a base plate before scaling. This can then be removed at the end.

Then create a corresponding offset from the S and connect it to the outer contour.
