topic Re: Drawings - Recent update modifies MODEL_PART_NO (et. al.) behaviour in Fusion Support Forum

Here is the latest update:

First, I want to thank you all for reporting on this issue. A decision has been made.

The change was intentional, however the impact was not. In order to reduce the change for you, we are now working to reverse the change that overwrote the flat pattern part numbers in previously existing designs. Important: To be completely clear: This will only be available for drawings created / existing before the change. The date for this update is not available yet, but will be posted here when it's known.

Going forward, it will be necessary to adopt the use of Configurations or Derive workflows to give flat patterns unique part number properties.

Here is what will happen:

The original data has been preserved. If you have existing drawings with flat patterns, those drawings will continue to show the properties of the flat patterns. Any already affected drawings will revert to the original custom part number properties upon being opened.

Going forward:

To have a unique part number property for a sheet metal flat pattern, and also potentially use both parts in one drawing file, one of the following workflows will be required.

Configurations – Configure the parts to add unique part numbers. In the drawing, create sheets/views using each configuration, flat and folded. The configuration carries the unique part numbers.

Derive – Derive both the flat pattern and folded model into a new design and create unique part number properties for each.

<video-js data-video-id="6371658467112" data-account="6057940548001" data-player="default" data-embed="default" class="vjs-fluid" controls="" data-application-id="" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></video-js>
(view in My Videos)

Drawings - Recent update modifies MODEL_PART_NO (et. al.) behaviour

The recent update appears to have change the behaviour of referenced properties/attributes for sheet metal objects.

I have a number of drawings that are several years old, but that I reference (and/or update) reasonably frequently as idividual parts go through their lifecycle.

When I opened a drawing after the recent update - I received the following message:

There are flat pattern properties in this drawing. They will be updated with folded model properties now.

And as a result, where I previously had a functional parts list on a page, or an attribute referencing MODEL_PART_NO, these are now showing --- (3 dashes).

Can someone explain what has changed ? Nothing mentioned in the update blog is there ?

Any number of attempts and I cant seem to get anything capturing the part number.

These drawing files contain probably 100 to 150 pages - so I have no plans to recreate them again.

Glenn.

Can you please share the model with us, please send me a direct message or you can mail me at mohammed.ali@autoddesk.com or you can invite to your hub.

Just to mention, it is expected with March release to get the properties of flat pattern to be updated with folded, I just checked on a sample model on the part number getting 3 dashes and I did not face the issue

Thanks!

Can you explain this in more detail ?

Which properties are changed … and why? If the flat pattern object and
folded object are independent - why have folded properties applied to flat
patterns ?

Thanks !!

I am checking with the team on the exact technical details and will share soon with you.

If you were online when you created the drawings ?

If property did not update, will it update or show the Part number when you wait for some time say around 2- 3 min or so?

Also if it still shows the 3 dashes, can you please click on Refresh button in Manage Tab? This should refresh all properties available in canvas.

Also Please share the dialogistic log files with us (Help-->Support and Diagnostics-->Diagnostic Log files)
Share the log files are generated after clicking in Diagnostic Log files.

Hello @gvisca44 ,

Thanks for the reply and also getting on a call quickly. As discussed, we will get back to you soon on the issue as we are investing the issue you are facing with 3 dashes,

Just to highlight here.

The issue is only on legacy models from 2021

A little recent models we see the part number of flat pattern getting updated to folded (which is expected from March release)

Hey Mohammed,

I dont think date created is necessarily the driving consideration here.

I had a look at another project, and a drawing file created 18th March 2023 exhibits the same issue as we discussed yesterday. Yet another created 24th March 2023 appears to be ok on the first page - but subsequent pages exhibit "---" as discussed.

Would you like me to invite you to that hub and share links ?

Glenn.

Hi Phil,

thanks for your reply. Just to be clear - I am in the "flat pattern P/N equals folded P/N" camp. They are the same thing after all ...

The reason I elected to change the flat pattern part number was because the original implementation of MODEL_PART_NO on flat pattern drawings used the part number of the flat pattern, which always defaulted to flatpattern1 (or whatever it was...). So I wrote an add-in scans a model, and updates ALL sheet metal flat patterns with the folded model part number and description and the material thickness.

I have no issue with the intent of the change, it just didn't appear to work as intended, and I'm not keen on recreating a whole lot of drawings (days and days of work).

I am not completely sure what your comment "the original data has been preserved" means. Are modified part numbers in the model file preserved ? or are they only preserved on the drawings ? (e.g. if I check a flat pattern in the 3D model file in the GUI - I can see any attributes under "Properties". I've not checked through the API).

I hope my question is clear.

Glenn.

The solution has not been released yet.

The solution we are working on will preserve:

Customized flat pattern part numbers

In design files that existed before the March release

This data has not been removed by the recent change, and will be visible once the solution has been released.

I just tested the latest Fusion Insider build (*slated for release later in May) and see the intended behavior as described above. Legacy data will perform as it was written, new data must use a new workflow such as configurations or derive to continue with separate folded/flat part numbers.

I opened some of my drawings that had been "migrated" and they reverted back to the original state. If you want to test/confirm this before the May major update, sign up for Fusion Insider if you aren't already. It would be nice to get confirmation from one of you that the fix is correctly working with your data, although I'm confident you will find good results.

A note of caution about Fusion Insider: Once a file has been saved in Fusion Insider it has a new schema which prevents it opening in older versions (such as current production Fusion). It's a full new release of Fusion and is not backward compatible. If you edit/save a file using Fusion Insider, you will have to wait until Fusion (production) catches up to Insider, later in May when the full release happens.

@carl.j.barker This could be a separate issue because loss of part number and description wasn't the entirety of the original complaint. It was that part numbers for flat patterns were being overwritten, and this issue, got conflated a bit because they seem related.

In order to see what's going on with your data, someone at Autdodesk will need to look into the back end services. There are a couple ways to achieve this.

Open a support ticket - I'm recommending this because the issue needs to be on the support team radar at this point, since the bug/fix wasn't apparently entirely related to you. They can look at the back end data.

Open an Insider PR - different engineers will look at the data.

At the same time I will escalate this within engineering.

Glenn.

Will open an insider PR.

ta
