Have you copied and pasted any components into the design from another design or inserted and then broken the link? If you have did they have a parameter named tolerance that you renamed? The other place to look is have you renamed any of the model parameters?

Just to confirm, it is just adding a new parameter named tolerance that's the problem, you can add a parameter with a different name OK?

yeah, I've been lurking on this one, and am curious. If you want to PM me a link to the design, @aleshep , I could look at it, and keep it confidential. @HughesTooling - the only thing that I thought of is that in CAM, isn't "tolerance" a special value that you can use in dialogs? Not sure if that is a true parameter or not, but could that keyword have somehow leaked over into the design side?

There is a tolerance variable in the CAM workspace but never come across parameters\variables from CAM being seen in the design workspace.

Here's an example of what I described above. Copy\Paste New into another design and tolerance becomes a hidden parameter. It you delete the component and tolerance_1 parameter the hidden parameter is still in the design. You could also lose track if you renamed the tolerance_1 parameter.

I've attached the design.

No, as far as I know it becomes invisible and uneditable. Your only option is use another name, but you'll need to be careful not to type tolerance by mistake while doing the rest of the design.
