When i do this all i get is a free move symbol, the componenet does not move the symbol does. This happens whether i break the link or don't (like you show in the example). I like the origional poster only get one chance to place the part right. Ok, new feature "Unground from Parent" hasn't hit help files yet.

Fusion 360 only gives you one chance to position imported/linked components?

Hi There,

I often find myself having to reposition smaller components I've imported into my assembly file. Fusion 360 seems to only give you one chance to position the components, otherwise, you have to break their links, and that can be a big workflow price to pay for only a reposition.

The only workaround I can think of is to:

Import the components

Roughly position them

Break their links

Position them exactly within the context of the assembly and add reference points/anchors to the assembly's sketch

Remove the components

Bring them back in as linked components

Move the imported components to exactly where you want them to be when you get that one chance

It seems like a lot of the above steps/time sinks can be avoided by keeping the positioning of components within the context of an assembly outside of components' linked attributes, which is already being done when we first import components.

What are the reasons for not allowing linked components to be freely positioned after setting their initial position?

I must not be understanding what you mean by a "linked" component. I use linked components all the time and move them during initial placement and then anytime I need to afterwards. Take a look at the screencast, if I missed the boat, clarify your question and attach a screencast of your own to show your issue.

@andresGPZMB - I suspect that you might be using the Move command to reposition, and the default is "Bodies". With Linked components, you cannot move the Body from the referencing design, which is probably what you are seeing. Instead, choose "Components" to move the component:

This will move the component instead of the body.

But, a preferable way to move components is to relate them to other components using Joints. That will allow the components to maintain a relationship with the other component.
