Part # changes when Changing Part Name through component properties

Here is a bug that is making my life difficult.

When I rename a part name by opening the properties of the component the part number changes also - but not until I close the properties window. This makes for a not fun surprise.

This is a massive headache when working with McMaster components. I need both a part name and a number. I need the name to make my model easy to navigate (e.g. 90 Deg Brk 1 1/2" Rail) and a part number for ordering (e.g. McMaster # 47065T271).

Here is my workflow:

1. Insert Mcmaster component - named in the model as a part number

2. Rename McMaster part name something useful - leaving the part number as is

3. After creating a drawing and realizing I've lost all my McMaster part numbers go back into the model and rename each part number (pulling data from my costing spreadsheet).

4. Enter that part number into the part description field and delete the part number field from my BOM since it is just a hastle anyway...

BONUS STEP

5. Continue using my spreadsheet as a liable asset not linked to the model and the Drawing BOM is really only useful for printing......

I think this is working as design. Can you help me understand what I'm seeing here that does not work for you?

That looks like what I would expect, but I don't get the same result.

Here is what I get:

Work flow is:

1. insert part

2. right-click>properties

3. fill in fields (left side of screen captures)

4. Close properties

5. reopen properties - see the part number as a clone of part name (right side of screen capture)

This only happens the first time around however. If I edit the property fields a second time on step #5 above, then it becomes permanent.

Got it, so the problem only happens on the first edit of properties. Good to know.

Thanks I can reproduce this for a bug report.

Workaround:

When renaming the part in Properties, copy the McMaster-Carr part number to clipboard.
Immediately restart Properties and paste it into the part number field.

I know this is more clicks and diligence, but it works for the time being. Sorry for the hassle.

There are no plans at this time to fix the issue. Please continue to use the workaround.

Workaround:

When renaming the part in Properties, copy the part number to clipboard.
Immediately restart Properties and paste it into the part number field.
