I'm trying to make a 3D model of a Garmin 10 GPS device. I took a picture of the thing, Image Traced it in Illustrator, saved it as SVG and imported it into Fusion.

What I can't figure out is how to extrude the surfaces so that everything has the smooth, rounded edges of the actual device. When I try to push-pull something and then fillet the edges, I get either errors or a program crash, both of which tell me that I'm going about this all wrong.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi!

First things first - there's no easy way to replicate rather complex surface (as you have) with simple point-and-shoot/trace/import SVG/extrude workflow.

And you see this yourself - you've got very complex body that's impossible to manipulate.

The root is that sketch has actually very complex curve

and that leads to complex and unable-to-modify surface.

I'd stick with following approach

1. Get primary shape of your device without any recesses, buttons, etc.

This could be done either with surface modeling or t-spline sculpting, it depends on how your device looks like from other sides (has no garmin near to reference).

2. Add more details as you move on.

If you choose surface modeling to get your primary shape you should not use any imported svg/dxf. Draw that in sketch itself using canvas as a reference and try to make as simple sketch as you can. Use lines, arcs, and CV-splines (control point splines) with as little points as you can. Like this

This sketch has only 2 primitives - straight line and 5-degree CV-spline to resemble part of device shape.
