Hi 200615265!

In generative design, preserves, obstacles, and starting shapes all have to be separate bodies. This goes along with how generative design is supposed to work. Let me see if I can explain...

Suppose I have a part I want to re-design with generative:Original part

There are pieces of this body that we want to keep in the generative outcome, and other pieces we want to be re-designed. Generative can't guess where you need to connect this shape to another part in your assembly, so you need to tell it. We do this by creating small new bodies which represent the regions that we want to see preserved in the final design. In this case I want a 4mm ring around each of my bolt holes, to make the holes re not removed and that there is material there for the bolt to clamp onto. I added another circle to each of my sketches and extruded them into rings (using the New Body option so they don't get joined to my original part):Preserves

I also want to create some obstacles that keeps generative design from adding material inside the bolt holes, for example:

Obstacles

When I enter generative design, I will hide the original part and just select the preserve and obstacle bodies to specify the regions of the part I want included or excluded from the final design:

Generative setup

For completeness, I would also add a few additional obstacles in this case to protect the faces that will connect to the broader assembly as well as ensure I have space to insert the bolts in the final part:

Final preserves and obstacles

Does that make sense? The official generative design tutorials go into more depth about each of these steps and how to get the most out of generative design.

Ben

Hey Guys, I have a really frustrating issue occurring right now. I am a high school student and working on an engineering capstone project. I designed a part in inventor 2020, and my team and I are trying to use generative design to our advantage in fusion 360. However, when I try to preserve a region, fusion just selects the whole body and I cant select specific regions.

It should be selecting it as a face. But, if you can attach a picture, it would be nice to understand the issue.

I want to suggest a priliminary try selecting selection priority to face and then select. Let us know what happens next. (Also attach a picture)
