extruding from a solid body

I created the profile for all the v-slot compenents I would use for an upcoming project. The prototype component is only 20mm long. I need to now get a piece 350 mm long of the same profile. Is it possible to extrude from the profile WITHOUT redefining the sketch (there by coping over all the lines to create another sketch)? If I have to retrace and project all the lines to create the sketch, I will, but my experience is that would be kind of tedious for all the components I have.

I will wager that you are doing too much work.

File>Export and then Attach your *.f3d file here and end all doubt.

It appears that something is going wrong. I have attached the file three times on my end and it appears to post fine, but then I go back and look and it does not show up in the post. Is there something I need to do to this file to make it sendable?

This has not been a good say for results I guess.

You could share a link to the design. In fusion, go into file/share/public link. Make sure "Share the latest version" and "Allow item to be downloaded". Then just paste the link in a reply.

I missed that this is an imported component.

As @ralliartswe indicated, you will have to provide a public link

open the original file to export it.

Got the design alright this time!

Take a look at the video I posted, and see if you can solve your problems using parameters. You make duplicates of the component beam, change the parameter and get a new length, then break the link to the original design. So that you end up with a unique component for each length. Did I understand your problem correctly? Hope it helps.

It appears that you are right about this being my solution. Unfortunately, the video is hard for me to read the menu options (fuzzy) so it's a bit of a challenge to duplication the process.. I will play with it for a while. I am pretty sure this is it.

I thought the recordings were a bit low quality, but I didn't realise just how bad they were. I did a new capture with better resolution and bitrate. Took forever for youtube to process it though 🙂

The second vid is better, still not that easy to read....but I think I understood. I got the component to use the parameter find in the original part diagram and that's a big plus.

I can't quite figure out how to do the following....

in the master, I have a parameter called c_beam_length and the extrusion is pointing to that parameter. Changing it will change the length which is perfect.

When I go to the assembly, what ever is in the master parameter will dictate the length of the part, but it is stil not clear to me how I would change the length in the assembly without changing the master. I tried making a copy of the part i brought in, but not sure where to go from there. If I bring in 20 copies of the same component, how do I set the length of each to something specific to that particular copy of the component.

After you made the copy, you need to right-click the component that you want to make independent, and select "break link".

After the link is broken, changing the parameter of this part won't affect the master, or vice versa.

Also, open up your parameters of your assembly, you should find all of your c_beam_extrusion_length parameters there, to edit to your heart's content.

I found one of Lars Christenson's clips talking a little about breaking links for components. There might be something helpful there. Check it out.

I decided that I have spent enough time trying to make this work and don't want to waste anyone else's time. I am not sure if I am just not understanding or what, but the mole kept sticking his head out.

For now, I will just create different versions of the extrusion with each set to a specific length. I was trying to avoid that, but I have already spent more time on it than making it work would save me.

Sorry to hear that. Since english isn't my native language, I can sometimes have difficulties getting my point across, so that might make understanding a bit harder.

I feel that learning Fusion360 is a whole lot of experimentation. When I made the biggest leaps in understanding F360, it was from quite random ideas I got, that I just had to try and see if they worked the way I thought they would. So I have tons of small designs only made as excercises, to better understand the tools, and the application. Don't be afraid that you'll break the application, cause you can't :). Just go crazy.
