Hi Everyone, I have a complex little drawing that I'm unable extrude. Can anyone have a look at the file please to see if they can extrude the ring, not the centre. Extrusion is 1/16"...

Also please let me know what I did wrong so I dont repeat myself, many thanks

Rachel;.

Hi,

1. The reason is an unclosed profile in the sketch.
2. create only one item in the sketch & extrude it.
Then duplicate the entity using the Circular Pattern Toool in Body Mode*.

günther

In the screencast I show how I created a new sketch and projected one element.

Then I closed the gaps with the Coinzidenz tool and extruded the profile.

*In sketch mode, Fusion is in danger of crashing with such quantities of elements.

Not a direct answer, but something related to keep in mind: 80 - 85% of the calculation needed for a part is in the sketches of that part. Its a big task for the computer to keep track of all those lines, dimensions and interacting relationships.

A sketch like this is a disaster for CAD performance....and not just in Fusion 360. It will badly degrade the performance of any CAD system I am aware of.

It is far better, performance-wise, to have several, simple sketches instead of one magnus opus of a sketch.

Keeping this in mind may help you more easily see and find such errors as you have here as well.

Hi there. Thank you both for replying. I understand what both of you have said but have to disagree with the approach for this model. I'm not sure how many gears, pinions and wheels are in this build but quite a few. Although the drawings will be complex the model will suffer less if the gears are single entities rather than hundreds of I use guenthers approach. That 1 gear will have over 300 teeth or bodies where 1 is more idea. So I need to close the loop for the outer teeth and extrude the area between both sets to make 1 ring with teeth inside and out.

Thanks.

Rachel.

Hi Rachel,

Although I think that everyone should have their own experience, with all that this entails, I give this advice:
Check your assumption ... .. will suffer less if the gears are single entities rather than hundreds of I use guenthers approach. ... again when you have studied the parameters, including the definition of variables.

günther
