thanks I figured that was the case. Long story, I'm calibrating a canvas after having already having done some sketching then scaling the sketching just wanted to do an arbitrary check on the canvas in a couple places to see how it all went. I'm a beginner and just randomly jumping the gun on working on a project because really, who has a couple years to do tutorials.

I just want to click point a and then click point b and be told the distance in the framework within which I'm working. Not between two objects or such just an arbitrary point a and an arbitrary point b. Two dimensional on a face using a canvas to pick the points which currently do not relate to any object constructed.

this is not possible. You can measure between two model vertices, work points, or sketch points, but not between any to arbitrarily clicked points. I'm not sure I understand why you would need to do that. It seems like such a measurement would be unreliable, depending on where you picked.

ah, calibrating a canvas... This is actually one area where you CAN pick random points and measure (or adjust) the distance. Right click on the canvas and choose Calibrate:

then, you can pick any two points in the canvas and measure, or set a new measurement, for those two points, and scale the canvas to whatever size you want:
