Constrained dimensions between components in a design?

Hello.

I am new to Fusion 360. I have used various resources to learn the software and I'm now trying my own designs.

My question concerns whether it is possible to have dimensions that are constrained between components in a design. By way of example; consider a solid disc of diameter D and thickness T that is to be insterted into a washer of thickness t, inner diameter din and outer diameter dout = din+2w where w is the width of the washer.

In order for the washer to accomodate the disc (i.e. to acheive a bigger split disc) din = D and t = T.

I have created the disc and the washer as two components within the same design (by revolving a rectangle around a central axis. However if I alter D in the disc, I then have to edit din accordingly. Is it possible to have a dimension in one component constrained to a dimension in another? This way only one component needs to be edited, (as the interface dimensions are constrained to alter automatically.)

Many thanks

Gunther, Thanks for your swift reply. I will study the projection tool as you suggest.

G

J Hackney.

Thankyou for your time and effort in putting this together, much appreciated. I will study what you have done over the next few days. That said, one thing came to mind immediately. I notice your washer and disc (both have a cube icon) are components in a design called (Unsaved), with a tall and short rectangle. The washer and disc are both available in the timeline.

I have the the disc component (with the tall and short rectangles) and the washer as a component. As such when I acttivate each, they have their own timeline. Clearly there is some form of hierarchy going on here, and evidently I don't understand the difference (terminology and functionality) between an item with the tall and short rectangles and an item with a single cube. Would you enlighten me please.

Thanks again

Dr G. Horler

I best can answer you observations by creating a short Screencast. You would like to strive to create a component and have all related bodies, and their sketches, under it. Then the components are grouped together, either as a sub-assembly or an assembly, under the top level assembly. Your reference to the tall and short rectangle should better be seen as the small cubes represent a single component, stack components together you get stacked cube icons, what you call a tall rectangle, which is called an assembly or sub-assembly depending on its location in the browser tree. Go back to my supplied model, drag the end of the timeline beyond the last grayed out icon and back and observe the browser tree changes.
